
Gardner-Webb Swimming Drops Dual Meets at Queens on Friday

Charlotte, N.C. - Queens' men's swim team won 10 of 11 events, and the Royals' women's squad won 9 events as the Runnin' Bulldogs men's and women's swim teams dropped their respective season-opening dual meets on Friday.
In the meet's opening event, the 200 medley relay, tight races determined the first place finisher, with Queens coming out on top in both the men's and women's events. Gardner-Webb's Kaylee McCallan, Charity Byrum, Mary O'Doherty, and Christina Clayton combined for a time of 1:48.63 to give the Runnin' Bulldog women a second place finish in the event.
In the men's 200 medley relay, GWU was edged by Queens (1:34.13). The quartet of Colin James, Jordan Denmark, Matt Anderson, and Tate Warden raced to a collective time of 1:34.76 to secure a second place finish in the event.
In the women's 1,000 free, sophomore Madi Dinsmore led GWU with a second place showing behind a time of 10:47.41, but the Royals won the event thanks to Meridith Boudreaux's 10:29.82 performance to make it two event wins in a row.
Queens also came out on top in the men's 1,000 free, as Alex Menke finished in 9:37.58. Solid early season swims from sophomores Luke Denman (9:50.56) and Andy Watts (9:55.48) earned them second and third place finishes, respectively.
In the women's 200 free, Gardner-Webb occupied the second and third place finishers. Sophomore Giorgie Graves raced to a time of 1:53.61, but was edged by Queens' Lillian Gordy (1:53.37). Senior Faith Kempf (1:56.55) took third place in the event.
Sophomore Nathan LIle led GWU in the men's 200 free, racing to a time of 1:41.92 to finish second in the event. Lile followed the Royals' freshman Matt Josa, who finished first in 1:40.18.
Queens finished 1-2 in both the men's and women's 50 free, as Gardner-Webb was led by third place finishes from Christina Clayton (25.15) and Anderson (22.13) in the events, respectively.
Freshman Adél Kiss led GWU in the women's 200 IM, placing third with a time of 2:12.69. The Royals went 1-2 in the event to extend their lead on the women's side.
Queens also occupied to top spot in the men's 200 IM, winning a close race behind Felipe Oliveira's time of 1:54.89. Denmark (1:55.00) took second in the event, finishing just behind the Royals' top finisher.
In the women's 200 fly, Graves (Riverview, Fla.) raced to a time of 2:08.89 for a second place finish, and Kempf (Sterling, Kan.) finished strong to take third place with a time of 2:11.17. Sophomore Sarah Singleton (2:13.95) helped put GWU's depth on display in the event with a fourth place showing.
Senior Cody Meyers led GWU in the men's 200 fly with a second place finish, hitting the touchpad at 1:59.32. Warden (1:59.41) added a third place finish for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event.
Queens put up a 1-2 finish in the women's 100 free, getting fast races from Gordy (52.65) and Shane Knight (54.33) to extend their lead. Junior Jenna Ballinger (55.30) and freshman Maria Seward (55.65) led GWU in the event, finishing third and fourth respectively.
Lile (Waynesville, N.C.) picked up the first win of the day for GWU, helping swing some momentum on to the Runnin' Bulldogs' side by taking first place in the men's 100 free (46.82). Freshman Hal McKay sprinted to a time of 48.01 in the event, adding a fourth place finish for GWU.
In the women's 200 back, Gardner-Webb showed off its depth by taking second, third, and fourth place. April Niccolai (2:08.69), Kaylee McCallan (2:12.78), and Taylor Schwartz (2:14.55) scored points for GWU in the event.
Josa sparked a 1-2 finish for Queens in the men's 200 back, racing to a time of 1:46.85 in the event. Denmark (1:57.45) and freshman Connor Bos (1:58.64) picked up third and fourth place finishes, respectively.
In the women's 500 free, Kiss added a second place finish in the first dual meet of her collegiate career. The Runnin' Bulldog rookie closed fast for a time of 5:16.09 in the event.
Queens occupied the top two spots in the men's 500 free, winning a tight race for the second spot thanks to Christian Yeatts' time of 4:49.31. Denman (4:49.63) and Watts (4:51.99) took third and fourth in the event, respectively.
Byrum (Winston-Salem, N.C.) gave Gardner-Webb its first win on the women's side, outpacing the field in the women's 200 breast for a time of 2:21.15. Senior Kristina Grayson (2:33.58) added a fourth place finish for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event.
Freshman Andrew Linzie led Gardner-Webb in the men's 200 breast, picking up a fourth place finish with a time of 2:18.78.
Gardner-Webb closed the meet strong in the women's 400 free relay, securing a 1-2 finish in the event. Ballinger, Kempf, Graves, and Clayton teamed up for a time of 3:37.32, and Kiss, Dinsmore, Caroline Andrews, and Schwartz combined to finish in 3:41.86 and take second place in the event.
Queens finished on top in the meet's final event on the men's side, winning the 400 free relay with a time of 3:08.75. GWU took second behind fast swims from Lile, McKay, Anderson, and Joe MacGregor.
Gardner-Webb's men's and women's swim teams will be back in the pool for the Wingate Quad meet, held November 1-2 in Charlotte, N.C.
