
Gardner-Webb Women's Swimming Scores CCSA Dual Meet Victory Over VMI on Saturday

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb women's swimming was victorious in hosting for the first time this season, scoring a 152-108 win over VMI in a relay meet format Saturday afternoon at Bost Pool.
The Runnin' Bulldogs won six events and were able to get valuable competition experience in anticipation of the squad's November taper meet in securing the win at home on Saturday. GWU will taper for the Fall Frenzy Invitational, held Nov. 22-24 in Charlotte, N.C.
Gardner-Webb opened the day with a 1-2 finish in the women's 3x100 butterfly relay. April Niccolai (59.82), Allie Petersen (1:06.19), and Taylor Schwartz (1:04.42) teamed up to finish 1st in 3:10.43, with Niccolai's lead-off split representing the fastest in the event.
The combination of Charity Byrum (1:03.11), Jenna Ballinger (1:00.02), and Mary O'Doherty (59.94) sparked a 1-2-3 sweep in the 3x100 backstroke relay. O'Doherty, a sprint specialist, raced to the fastest split time in the event.
GWU followed by going 1-2 in the 3x100 breaststroke relay, getting a 1st place finish from the trio of Maria Seward (1:15.23), April Niccolai (1:11.83), and Giorgie Graves (1:10.69). Anna Springer (1:09.47) recorded the fastest split in the event from her leadoff spot on the 2nd place team, and Faith Kempf (1:12.65) and Kristina Nork (1:16.35) finished out for a time of 3:38.47.
In the 800 free relay, the GWU women went 1-2, including a first place finish from Kaylee McCallan (2:01.44), Caroline Andrews (2:05.36), Kristina Nork (2:07.42), and Sarah Singleton (2:02.18), getting help from McCallan's fast start en route to a time of 8:16.40.
The Runnin' Bulldogs recorded a third straight 1-2 finish in the next event, the women's 500 free relay. Graves led off with a 50 split time of 25.22, Madi Dinsmore followed with a 56.81 100 split, Caroline Andrews split 1:28.09 in the next 150 free, and Christina Clayton closed with a 200 free split time of 2:01.98, as the group combined for an event-best time of 4:52.10.
Ballinger (1:01.48), Kristina Grayson (1:12.58), Singleton (1:01.25), and McCallan (56.48) pulled away to lead a 1-2 Runnin' Bulldog finish in the 400 medley relay, combining for a time of 1:12.12. Niccolai split a meet-best 100 fly time (59.71) on GWU's 2nd place quartet in the event.
Late in the meet, Graves and O'Doherty turned heads with season best 50 free splits during the women's 200 free relay. Graves, a sophomore from Riverview, Fla. split 24.35 from her second leg squad that finished in 1:42.22, while O'Doherty, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., led-off for the quartet that finished with a time of 1:42.56 by splitting 24.67.
GWU women's swimming turns its attention to its midseason taper meet, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will next compete at the Fall Frenzy Invitational (Nov. 22-24; Charlotte, N.C.).
