
Gardner-Webb's Byrum Wins 100 Breast, Lile Sets GWU 400 IM and 200 Free Records on Day Two of Wingate Fall Frenzy

Charlotte, N.C. - Charity Byrum defended her title in the women's 100 breaststroke and Nathan Lile reset his own school record in the men's 400 IM, while adding a school record performance while leading off the 800 free relay, to lead Gardner-Webb swimming on day two of the 2013 Wingate Fall Frenzy.
During prelims, Byrum set a new Fall Frenzy meet record at 1:03.06, giving her the No. 1 seed entering finals. The junior from Winston-Salem, N.C. held on to that top spot in a tight race with Queens' standout Caroline Arakelian (1:03.89) to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1st place finish with a finals time of 1:03.66.
Lile (Waynesville, N.C.) continued his impressive meet in the finals of the 400 IM, moving up to place 4th in 3:59.67, the fastest 400 IM time in Gardner-Webb history. The sophomore moved up while swimming in lane one after earning the seventh seed in prelims.
Leading off the men's 800 free relay, Lile wowed the crowd by putting his team out in front in a school record 200 free time of 1:39.95, propelling GWU's 'A' relay to a 5th place finish in 6:58.99.
Lile's 200 free time represented the fastest of the meet. Hayden Kosater of Queens won the event earlier in the night with a time of 1:40.57
In the finals session's first event, GWU went 3-4 in the women's 200 medley relay, getting a third place showing from Kaylee McCallan (27.43), Charity Byrum, Giorgie Graves, and Adel Kiss (24.39). The quartet finished in 1:46.64.
April Niccolai (27.49), Anna Springer (29.99), Sarah Singleton (26.07), and Christina Clayton (23.92) finished in 4th place, scoring key points with a time of 1:47.57 in the event.
The Gardner-Webb men opened their finals session in the men's 200 medley relay, taking 5th place behind a time of 1:33.88 Connor Bos (23.77), Brandon Searle (26.48), Nathan Lile (22.47), and Cole Hickey (21.08) teamed up for the top 5 finish.
Taft Kallam (25.15), Phil Leonard (27.93), Cody Meyers (23.65), and Joe MacGregor (21.62) raced to a time of 1:38.35, good for 12th in the event.
GWU continued to show its strength in IM events, putting two into the top 8 of the women's 400 IM led by Kiss. The versatile freshman closed fast for a personal best time of 4:30.90, a team-best 2nd in the event, while Niccolai (Naperville, Ill.) added a 4th place finish behind a personal best performance, 4:34.28, for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Senior Kristina Grayson also finaled in the event, placing 14th with a time of 4:45.31.
Complementing Lile's school record performance in the men's 400 IM, sophomore Luke Denman (Greenville, S.C.) also moved up in finals, winning the consolation heat while racing to a time of 4:05.23 to finish 9th overall, and senior Cody Meyers (Mobile, Ala.) recorded a season best time of 4:13.57 in placing 19th in the event.
Sophomore Ryan Palmer (Wrentham, Mass.) also put up a season best performance (4:19.63), good for 22nd in the event.
Gardner-Webb picked up a 2nd place finish from Graves (Riverview, Fla.) in the women's 100 fly. The sophomore recorded her second top 2 individual performance in as many days in finishing with a season best time of 55.86.
Sophomore Sarah Singleton (Elkin, N.C.) gave GWU two top 8 finalists in the event, placing 8th with a season best time of 58.37.
GWU also got finals swims from McCallan (Melbourne, Fla.) and Clayton (Brentwood, Tenn.), who finished 10th (58.78) and 13th (59.32) respectively. McCallan's finals time marked a season best, and Clayton achieved a season best time of 58.99 in prelims of the event Saturday morning.
In the men's 100 fly, Searle (Melbourne, Fla.) and Tate Warden (Charleston, W.Va.) paced the squad, as each placed top 8 in the event. Searle finished 7th, touching the wall at 51.22, while Warden took 8th place with a time of 51.25. Both Warden and Searle recorded season best performances (50.80 and 50.90, respectively) in prelims.
A pair of freshmen, Bos (Holland, Mich.) and McKay (Montgomery, Ala.), tacked on points for Gardner-Webb in the 100 fly. Bos finished 16th (54.08) and McKay moved up in finals to finish in 20th place with a season best time of 52.85. Bos raced to a personal best 100 fly time of 52.44 in prelims.
Kempf (Sterling, Kan.) impressed in the finals of the 200 free, finishing in 5th place to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event with a season best time of 1:53.96. Sophomores Caroline Andrews (Hillsborough, N.C.) and Taylor Schwartz (Westerville, Ohio) added points by finishing 10th 1:55.85 and 13th (1:57.19) in finals, and junior Jenna Ballinger (Lexington, Kent.) tacked on a 17th place finish, moving up in finals by racing to a season best time of 1:54.69.
Andrews' final swim in the 200 free (1:55.85) represented a personal best time, the second of the weekend for the second-year Runnin' Bulldog. Schwartz was also impressive in prelims, recording a season best time of 1:56.61.
A fast finals swim from Dyer, a freshman from Chesapeke, Va., led Gardner-Webb in the men's 200 free. Dyer finished 13th (1:44.41) and junior Joe MacGregor (Brooksville, Fla.) timed in at 1:46.12 (14th) to move up in finals. McKay finished with the 20th fastest time in the event at 1:46.57, and Andy Watts (Sarasota, Fla.) added a 23rd place finish after finishing in a season best 1:47.47 in finals.
In prelims, Dyer, MacGregor, and McKay set season best times at 1:44.35, 1:44.94, and 1:46.04, respectively.
Springer, a senior from Snellville, Ga., also was top 8 in the women's 100 breast Saturday night, finishing in 6th place after recording a time of 1:06.28 in finals. Fellow senior Samantha Shelley (Wilmington, Del.) placed 21st (1:10.72) having recorded a season best time of 1:09.93 in prelims of the event.
Springer raced to a season best time of 1:05.93 in prelims of the 100 breast.
Both Phil Leonard and Andrew Linzie made it back to swim in finals of the men's 100 breaststroke. Leonard placed 21st finishing fast for a finals time of 1:01.00 (season best), while Linzie raced to a time of 1:03.36 in finals to finish in 23rd place.
Linzie swam to a season best time in the morning, finishing at 1:02.27.
In the women's 100 back, McCallan led the Runnin' Bulldogs, swimming to a 6th place finish with a time of 58.85. The sophomore, who recorded her second top 10 finish of the night, with the performance, raced to a season best time of 58.23 during prelims.
Sophomores Schwartz and Singleton also picked up valuable points on the night, placing 15th (59.40) and 19th (1:00.83) respectively. Schwartz secured a season best time (58.86) in prelims and Singleton raced to a season best time of 59.87 in prelims of the event.
Speedy freshman Connor Bos cracked the top 8 of the men's 100 backstroke Saturday night, racing to an 8th place finish in finals and touching the wall at 51.96. Bos recorded a personal best time earlier in the meet, timing in at 51.57 during prelims of the 100 back.
Gardner-Webb's Taft Kallam (Randleman, N.C.) took 15th in the event (53.75), and Searle showed impressive burst in finishing 22nd in the event with a time of 53.55. Kallam finished his prelims swim with a season best time of 52.60 and Searle finished with a season best time of 53.01 during prelims.
The Gardner-Webb women closed the night strong in the 800 free relay, racing side-by-side to finish 2nd and 3rd in the event. GWU's 'A' relay, comprised of Ballinger (1:56.14), Kempf, Graves (1:56.09), and Andrews finished in 2nd with a time of 7:44.66.
Madi Dinsmore (1:56.72), Kiss (1:54.38), Schwartz (1:58.13), and Seward (1:55.56) teamed up to take 3rd in the event, finishing with a time of 7:44.79.
The Runnin' Bulldog men finished up Saturday night in strong fashion as well, taking 5th place in the 800 free relay from the combination of Lile (1:39.95), Dyer (1:45.19), McKay (1:47.34), and Watts (1:46.51). The four 200 freestylers combined for a time of 6:58.99 in the event.
Warden (1:45.69), Denman (1:48.79), Kallam, and Linzie added a 11th place finish for GWU in the event with a time of 7:12.19.
Gardner-Webb will look to close its midseason taper meet strong on day three of the 2013 Wingate Fall Frenzy. Prelims are scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. start on Sunday with finals slated to start at 5:00 p.m.
