Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb
volleyball team will wrap up its 2013 regular season road slate
this week, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will hit the road to take on the
Winthrop Lady Eagles and the Presbyterian College Lady Blue Hose on
Friday and Saturday, November 8th & 9th.
GWU will take on the Winthrop Lady Eagles on Friday night,
November 8th, at 7 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C., and then will turn
around to face off with Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon,
November 9th, at 2 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
In Gardner-Webb's 3-1 win over Campbell on Friday night, the
Runnin' Bulldogs as a team set a new GWU Division I single season
record in overall wins with 15. With the win, GWU also set a new
Division I program single season record in conference wins with
six.
GWU's Brianna Starr was named the Crons Brand Big South Freshman
of the Week for her play last week. Starr recorded 23 kills, 2.88
kills per set, 24 digs and 3.0 digs per set for the Runnin'
Bulldogs last week. In a 3-1 victory over Campbell, she registered
a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs. Starr followed that up
with 10 digs and seven kills against High Point. The award is her
second Crons Brand Freshman of the Week honor this season.
Middle blocker Tyra Montour was named the Big South Defensive
Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday.
Montour led the defensive efforts for Gardner-Webb last week with
17 blocks -- including 10 solo and 2.12 blocks per set. She
recorded nine blocks, including five solo efforts in the win over
the Fighting Camels. Against High Point, she tallied eight blocks
and five solo blocks in the four-set setback. With her 17 total
blocks on the week, Montour surpassed the 100 mark in total blocks
on the season.
Sophomore libero Anna Pashkova's 28 digs on Friday night in the
win over Campbell set a new GWU DI single season record for the
most digs in a single season, as she surpassed the previous total
of 541 set by Katie Matykowski back in 2007.
The Lady Eagles of Winthrop are 13-12 overall and 4-7 in
conference play heading into action this week. Winthrop is coming
off a 3-2 loss on the road to the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina
on Sunday, November 3rd.
The Lady Eagles, who defeated GWU 3-0 back on October 12th in
Paul Porter Arena, has won two of its last three contests with wins
over Liberty and Charleston Southern.
Irene Ojukwu leads the Eagles with 306 kills, while Rachel Lenz
leads the team with 96 total blocks on the year.
The Lady Blue Hose enter play this week at 8-19 overall and 6-5
in Big South Conference play. PC, who will host UNC Asheville on
Friday night, has dropped four of its last five matches over the
last few weeks and is just 3-6 since falling to Gardner-Webb 3-2
back on October 11th.
Presbyterian is led by the duo of Rachel Hall and Andrea Barman
who have tallied 302 and 282 kills apiece, respectively, while
libero Mary Trimpe leads the way defensively with 585 digs on the
season.
