
Gardner-Webb Falls At Winthrop, 3-0, Friday Night

Gardner-Webb (15-14, 6-5 Big South) had a tough start to the match, hitting minus-.036 in the opening set to fall behind early 10-5. Winthrop used a brief run to take a 17-7 lead and won 25-15. The Runnin' Bulldogs recovered, but could not get the win in the second set, falling 25-20 in a back-and-forth battle that was tied at 15 and saw GWU trail just 20-19 before a late Winthrop rally.
As has been the case all season, Gardner-Webb would not go away without a fight, going toe-to-toe with the Eagles (14-12, 5-7 Big South) in the third set. After pulling within a single point late, 23-22, the Runnin' Bulldogs saw Winthrop score the final two points of the match to seal the win.
Senior Emily Holte led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 12 kills and a strong .393 attack percentage (one error). Brianna Starr added six kills. Defensive ace Anna Pashkova reached the 1,000-dig mark during Friday night's match, entering just 10 shy of that mark and finishing with a team-high 14. Heather Feldman led the way with 24 assists and Tyra Montour had a team-high six total blocks - half of Gardner-Webb's total on the night.
Winthrop got 12 kills from Rachel Lenz and 11 from Jackie Landers as the Eagles hit .209 for the evening. Jessie Vicic had 38 assists for Winthrop.
Gardner-Webb get back to action on Saturday, traveling to face Presbyterian at 2:00 pm in Clinton, S.C.
