Riddick Named To Walter Camp FCS All-America Team
December 18, 2013 | Football
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Gardner-Webb
defensive end Shaquille
Riddick was named to the 2013 Walter Camp FCS All-America Team
on Wednesday.
Riddick (Akron, Ohio / Buchtel HS) also earned All-America honors from the Associated Press and Sports Network on Wednesday. He is only the second student-athlete in 44 seasons of Gardner-Webb senior college football to earn a spot on the Walter Camp All-America Team.
Defensive end Brian Johnston also earned Walter Camp All-America honors, appearing on the team in 2007. Johnston, then a senior, went on to be selected in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnston was recently voted to the Big South Conference's Football All-Decade Team (2002-2009).
Only 25 student-athletes are selected annually for the Walter Camp squad - 11 offensive players, 11 defensive players and three specialists.
Riddick set a new Big South Conference single-season sacks record in 2013 and recorded career-high totals in several categories. He finished the season with 67 total tackles 19.0 tackles for loss (minus-109), 8.5 sacks (minus-71), two pass break ups and 17 quarterback pressures in 11 games played.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound standout ranked second nationally and led the Big South in tackles for loss per game and his 109 negative yards recorded was the top mark in the nation during the regular season.
Riddick's stat line against top-25 opponents in 2013 was notable. GWU went 3-1 in those four games and Riddick recorded 28 total tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and nine pressures against ranked opponents.
Riddick's efforts also helped him finish fifth in balloting Monday for the prestigious Buck Buchanan Award - given annually by The Sports Network to the top defensive player in FCS. It marked the highest finish ever for a Gardner-Webb player in that award's final vote. Riddick was also named to the 2013 Ted Hendricks Award Mid-Season Watch List.
Riddick is one of 18 starters expected back for Gardner-Webb, which posted a 7-5 mark this past season - its top mark in the win column since 2003. All-Big South Conference nose guard O.J. Le'iatua Mau (6-2, 302) returns alongside Riddick on the defensive front, as do All-Big South linebackers Tanner Burch (6-3, 241) and Chad Geter (6-2, 233).
Gardner-Webb's 2014 defense will likely begin the season with nine juniors and seniors in the starting lineup.
In 2013, Gardner-Webb made tremendous strides defensively, ranking 96 spots higher in total defense nationally that it did one season before. GWU ranks fifth nationally in total defense with three FCS games remaining, allowing just 296.8 yards per game. That average set a new Big South team defense record, edging the 2012 Stony Brook defense by nearly two yards per game.
The Runnin' Bulldogs also rank in the top-25 nationally in fourth down conversion defense (2nd), first downs allowed defense (8th), passing yardage defense (10th), third down defense (11th), rushing defense (17th), tackles for loss (18th) and pass efficiency defense (22nd).
Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting All-America teams for the Football Bowl and Championship subdivisions.
The team was selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Football Championship Subdivision schools and certified by the accounting and auditing firm, Marcum LLP.
Riddick and Coastal Carolina linebacker Quinn Backus' selection to the 2013 Walter Camp All-America Team mark the first time in Big South Conference history that the league has placed two men on the team in the same season.
