Bell Places Third in the Decathlon as GWU Completes Weekend at 49er Classic in First Outdoor Meet of 2013

Charlotte, N.C. - Sophomore Ben Bell took third place in the decathlon, and Gardner-Webb track & field achieved five Top 10 finishes at the vaunted 49er Classic this weekend.
Bell finished third out of fifteen in the decathlon, turning in 5,957 points over the ten-event competition. A junior from Greensboro, N.C., Bell put up signature performances throughout the decathlon, including the 3rd best long jump (6.61 m) and shot put (11.56 m) marks in the event.
On the women's senior Taylor Cook (Boone, N.C.) picked up a 5th place finish in the women's pole vault. Cook achieved a height of 3.35 m to tie for fifth-best in the event.
Sarah Perkins led GWU in the women's 110 m hurdles. The freshman, Gorham, Massachusetts native picked up a 17th place finish in the event after racing to a time of 15.39. In the women's 400 m hurdles, sophomore Nicole Saxton (Tampa, Fla.) grabbed the 18th best time at 1:08.70.
Ivana Hughes, a senior from Evans, Ga., gave Gardner-Webb an 8th place finish in the 800 m run. Hughes raced to a time of 2:17.68 at the 49er Classic.
Kristen Hurley achieved the 20th best distance in the long jump. The junior from Columbia, Connecticut leaped 5.00 m. In the women's jump Kaylan Myers (Lexington, N.C.) led the Runnin' Bulldogs with an 11th place finish. The freshman achieved a height of 1.55 m in the event.
Junior Katie Spiro (Sylva, N.C.) placed 16th in the javelin, throwing a distance of 34.40 m in the event.
Gardner-Webb's 4x100 m relay team, comprised of Hurley, Perkins, Saxton, T'Keyah Bell, achieved a time of 49.49 to finish 9th in the event.
For the men, freshman Josh Wembolua got one of GWU's Top 10 finishes in the 110 m hurdles, placing 8th with a time of 15.26 in finals. Wembolua achieved a time of 15.08 in prelims of the event.
In the men's triple jump, Gardner-Webb's Chuboy Umeadi achieved a 14th place finish after jumping 13.23 m. The freshman led the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event.
Freshman Tyler Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) placed 15th in the men's pole vault. Marsengill cleared 4.15 m in the event.
Gardner-Webb put two in the Top 20 of the men's hammer throw. Freshman Alex Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) threw the 12th best distance in the event on Friday at 50.59 m, and sophomore Nathan Padfield (LaVergne, Tenn.) tossed 47.62 m, good enough for 18th in the event.
In the men's shot put, Young put up the 6th best distance in the event at 15.11 m, and fellow freshmen Xavier Stewart and A.J. White placed 15th and 16th in the event with distances of 13.30 m and 13.01 m respectively.
Gardner-Webb's throwers continued their solid weekend in the discus throw. Young threw 47.12 m, 10th best in the event, and White (Hurricane, W.Va.) tossed the 16th furthest with a mark of 43.03 m.
In the 4x100 m relay, the Gardner-Webb men garnered a 6th place finish behind the efforts of Stanley Fleurant, Brandon Addison, Wembolua, and Johnathan Parks. The quartet posted a time of 42.58 in the event.
Gardner-Webb track & field is back in action Friday, March 22 through Saturday, March 23 at the Weems Baskin Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
