
GWU Track & Field Achieves Third Place Men's and Women's Team Finish at the 2013 Carolina's Cup

Rock Hill, S.C. - Five Runnin' Bulldogs won individual events, including the first collegiate wins for Megan Melton and Chuboy Umeadi, to propel both the men's and women's track & field squads to third place team finishes at the Carolina's Cup, held at Winthrop University's Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex.
Freshmen Megan Melton and Kailey Robinson finished first and second in the women's pole vault. Melton (Riverside, Calif.) tied her season best at 3.35 m to win the event and Robinson finished second with a height of 3.05 m.
In the women's 100 m hurdles, junior Kristen Hurley (Columbia, Conn.) took second place thanks to a season best time. The two-time Big South Indoor Pentathlon champion finished at 15.01 in the event.
Kaylan Myers, a freshman from Lexington, N.C., equaled her season best performance in the women's high jump by leaping 1.55 m. Myers' performance, which ranked second best in the event, was followed by Olivia Moody's (5th, 1.50 m) and Hurley's (6th, 1.45 m).
Freshman Jessica Norris added a fourth place finish for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the women's high jump. Norris tied her season best, clearing 1.50 m in the event.
Ivana Hughes (Evans, Ga.) turned in a season best time in the 200 m dash on Friday. Hughes, who earned the Big South 400 m crown last season as a junior, took third in the 200 meters at the Carolina's Cup, racing across the finish line at 26.03.
Junior Ashley Slate (High Point, N.C.) added an eighth place finish for GWU in the event, achieving a time of 27.82.
Three Runnin' Bulldogs placed in the Top 8 of the women's javelin throw, led by Katie Spiro's (Sylva, N.C.) second place showing at 32.90 m. Moody was third (32.16 m) and junior Tomora Parker finished in seventh place (26.78 m).
Senior Ashlei Alexander (Queens, N.Y.) led Gardner-Web in the women's hammer throw, placing first with a distance of 52.26 m.
Junior Jasmine Miles (Amelia, Va.) won the women's discus throw in school record fashino at Friday's Carolina's Cup, capturing her first individual crown of the season. Miles, who threw a personal best and GWU all-time best 42.71 m, added a second place finish in the hammer throw with another personal best performance of 51.48 m.
Senior Yazzming Lee (Paterson, N.J.) was fifth in the women's hammer throw. Lee achieved a distance of 46.48 m as Gardner-Webb's throwers continued to impress on Friday. Lee added a second place finish (11.73 m) in the shot put.
Hurley earned a season best performance in the shot put, placing seventh at 10.57 m.
Junior Kyntoya Hansford (Miami, Fla.) finished in ninth in the hammer throw (38.85 m) and tacked on a fifth place showing in the discus throw for the Runnin' Bulldogs, achieving a distance of 36.49 m.
In the women's 3,000 m run, freshman Claire Cates picked up a tenth place finish behind a season best performance in the event. The Hillsborough, N.C. native finished in 11:54.50.
Senior Ariel Zimmerman finished sixth in the 800 m run at Friday's pre-conference tune up, as the Williamsburg, Va. native ran a personal best 2:18.86.
Gardner-Webb's 4x400 m quartet picked up a second place finish in establishing a new season best time. The relay's T'Keyah Bell, Sarah Perkins, Nicole Saxton, and Hughes teamed up to finish in 3:54.12.
Alex Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) won the shot put for the second consecutive meet, this time putting up a distance of 16.04 m. Fellow freshman Xavier Stewart followed with a sixth place finish after throwing 13.10 m. Ben Bell (Greensboro, N.C.) threw a personal best 11.61 m to finish eighth in the event.
A.J. White (Hurricane, W.Va.) led GWU in the men's discus throw. The freshman tossed a season best 44.16 m to take second place in the event, a collegiate best finish.
Nathan Padfield (LaVergne, Tenn.) took seventh in the discus throw behind a distance of 38.74 m, and Titus Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) added a season best performance at 31.48 m to take twelfth place in the event.
In the men's hammer throw, Padfield achieved a personal best performance, placing second in the event at 48.58 m. White threw a personal best 44.08 m in the event for GWU, third best in the event.
In the pole vault, Tyler Samotis (Hendersonville, N.C.) cleared 4.70 m. The redshirt freshman placed second in the event to lead the Runnin' Bulldog men.
Tyler Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) turned in a personal best performance in the men's pole vault. The freshman achieved a height of 4.40 m to place fourth in the event.
Bell recorded the second best high jump mark Friday, clearing 1.75 m, and added the best 100 m mark of his 2013 Outdoor campaign at 11.70 (10th).
Tavarus Ferguson achieved a personal best to finish in second place in the men's long jump. The junior, Evans, Ga. native recorded a distance of 6.68 m in the event.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' success in the jump events continued in the men's triple jump, where freshman Chuboy Umeadi earned first place honors with a season best performance. Umeadi leaped 13.80 m to win the event.
In the men's 800 m run, junior Trey Crook (Lexington, N.C.) led the squad with a sixth place finish, timing in at 2:00.64. Freshmen William Cottrell (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Aaron Cronk (West Jefferson, N.C.) took ninth (2:09.08) and tenth (2:11.27) in the event, respectively.

in the men's javelin throw. Cook earned a distance of 37.10 m.

Freshman Josh Wembolua led GWU in the 110 m Hurdles, giving the Runnin' Bulldog men a fifth place finish. Wembolua raced to a season best time of 15.06 in the event.
Mike McClay, a junior from Lawrenceville, Ga., ran to a personal best time in the men's 3,000 meters, placing third in the event with a time of 8:45.77. With the performance, McClay etched his name into the Gardner-Webb record books, having recorded the fastest men's 3,000 m time in school history.
Gardner-Webb's 4x100 m relay finished in fourth place Friday behind a time of 44.19. Joseph Martin, Hamilton, Brandaun Addison, and Stanley Fleurant teamed up for the time, GWU's second fastest of the season.
GWU also achieved a fourth place finish in the 4x400 m relay, with Bell, Cronk, Cook, and McClay giving the Runnin' Bulldog men the fourth best time in the event at 3:30.76.
The meet marks the the final tune up for the Runnin' Bulldogs prior to the 2013 Big South Outdoor Championship meet, held next weekend (April 18-20) at Winthrop University (Rock Hill, S.C.).
