Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb freshmen Sarah Perkins and Alex Young will compete at the Georgia Tech Track & Field Invitational, scheduled for Friday, May 10 through Thursday, May 11 in Atlanta, Ga.
Perkins, a freshman from Gorham, Maine, is slated to run in her signature event, the women's 400 m hurdles. The first-year Runnin' Bulldog currently owns the Big South's fifth fastest time in the event this season after racing to a season best time of 1:01.75 en route to a fifth place finish at the 2013 Big South Outdoor Championship meet.
Achieved after running her previous best time of the season (1:03.44) during prelims of the 400 m hurdles, Perkins' breakthrough performance in finals at the Big South Championships leads Gardner-Webb in the event this season and adds to an impressive resumé achieved in this her first season of collegiate competition. Perkins won the 400 m hurdles (1:04.34) and placed third in the 100 m hurdles after running a season best 15.32 at the Terrier Relays (Spartanburg, S.C.).
Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) will compete in both the hammer throw and the shot put for the Runnin' Bulldogs this weekend in hopes of adding to an outstanding first season of competition at Gardner-Webb. Young won the hammer throw (62.09 m) at 2013 Big South Outdoor Championships back in mid-April and added a second All-Conference performance by placing second in the shot put (16.71 m).
Additionally, Young secured a Gardner-Webb school record in the shot put earlier this season while placing first at the Winthrop Invitational. Young threw 17.18 m in the event, the furthest in GWU history, to etch his name in the record books once again. The freshman has also established new school records in the Indoor shot put (16.52 m) and the weight throw (20.72 m) this season.
