
Runnin' Bulldog Men Handle Hoyas, 185-95, in First Dual Meet of New Year

Harrisonburg, Va. - Gardner-Webb won the opening 200 medley relay and never looked back, racing to a 185-95 over Georgetown on the road Saturday afternoon to open the Spring 2014 season.
Senior Jordan Denmark (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Nathan Lile (Waynesville, N.C.) each won four events to lead the charge. Denmark and Lile helped GWU jump on top as a part of the opening win in the 200 medley relay, where Connor Bos (24.29), Denmark (25.66), Matt Anderson (22.76), and Nathan Lile (20.72) combined to finish 1st with a time of 1:33.43.
Luke Denman (Greenville, S.C.) won the next event, the 1,000 free, pacing to a time of 9:46.13 to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the event win. Fellow sophomore Andy Watts (Sarasota, Fla.) was 3rd (9:55.48) and freshman Josh Hanson placed 4th (10:29.81) in the event to add points for GWU early.
The sophomore duo of Lile and Tate Warden (Charleston, W.Va.) kept GWU's momentum rolling by going 1-2 in the 200 free. Lile won with a time of 1:42.99 and Warden raced to his season best time (1:44.82) to take 2nd in the event.
Bos (Holland, Mich.) stepped in to win the 100 back for Gardner-Webb, outracing the field in 52.96. Taft Kallam was 4th (54.51) and Brandon Searle placed 5th (54.66) in the event for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
In the 100 breast, Denmark won his first individual event of the day, racing to a time of 58.19. Fellow senior Phil Leonard (Greenville, S.C.) held down 3rd place to add points for GWU in the event, finishing with a time of 1:02.57.
Senior Cody Meyers (Mobile, Ala.) made it six event wins in a row, winning the 200 fly from start-to-finish for a time of 1:56.77. The veteran was followed by Warden, who secured 2nd place individually for the second time on the day with a time of 1:59.19.
Gardner-Webb's sprinters turned in an emphatic showing in the 50 free, going 1-2-3-4 led by Anderson's 1st place finish. The senior from Fortaleza, Brazil got his hand on the wall first at 21.65, fellow senior Cole Hickey was 2nd at 21.93, and freshmen Nicholas Dyer (22.05) and Andrew Linzie (22.26) placed 3rd and 4th to complete the clean sweep of the event.
In the 100 free, Lile sprinted to his second individual win of the day, recording a time of 47.05 to finish first. Freshmen Dyer (48.05) and Hal McKay (48.28) finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively, to help Gardner-Webb pull away.
GWU went 1-2-3 in the 200 back, led by Denmark's second individual win of the afternoon. The senior, who finished in 1:55.91, was followed by Bos (1:57.35) and Kallam (1:57.55), who finished fast to help GWU stay on top.
Standout Hoya breaststroker Christian Kilgore won Georgetown's first event of the day, the 100 breast, with a time of 2:13.48. Gardner-Webb would occupy 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the event, getting good races from Hanson (2:16.39), Leonard (2:17.66), and Ryan Palmer (2:20.03).
In the 500 free, Denman (4:47.00) picked up another event win, and Warden (4:49.34) won a tight race for 2nd, giving Gardner-Webb a 1-2 finish in the event.
Georgetown's Martin Vanin sprinted to the win in the 100 fly, but Gardner-Webb's Searle (52.61) and Anderson (53.78) placed 2nd and 3rd in the event, respectively, to add points to the Runnin' Bulldog effort.
Denmark's third individual win came in the 200 IM, as the senior raced to finish first thanks to a time of 1:59.32. Palmer (2:00.88) and Meyers (2:01.05) were 3rd and 4th in the event, respectively, for GWU.
Gardner-Webb closed the night with a win in the 400 free relay. Lile (47.74), McKay (47.98), Warden (47.87), and Dyer (47.65) teamed up for a time of 3:11.24 to finish the meet strong.
Dual meet action for the Runnin' Bulldogs continues next week, as Gardner-Webb travels to take on Limsetone (Jan. 16) and Davidson (Jan. 18) in the coming days.
