January 17, 2014 | Swimming
Gaffney, S.C. - Nathan Lile won three events, including the 100 and 200 freestyle, and five different Runnin' Bulldogs won individual events to secure a 124-76 win at Limestone on Thursday night.
The win over the Saints marked Gardner-Webb's second straight dual meet victory. GWU knocked off Georgetown last week in its first meet of 2014.
Lile, a sophomore from Waynesville, N.C., won the 200 free with a time of 1:43.65, the 100 free after finishing at 46.73, and anchored the 1st place 200 medley relay team to open the meet. Lile anchored in 20.50, helping the relay team of Connor Bos (24.44), Jordan Denmark (26.11), and Matt Anderson (22.65) achieve a time of 1:33.70.
Fellow sophomore Luke Denman (Greenville, S.C.) helped the Runnin' Bulldog men maintain their fast start by winning the 1,000 free, the first of his two individual wins on the day. Denman, whose winning time of 9:51.70 was followed by second place finisher Andy Watts' 9:57.28 for a 1-2 GWU finish in the 1,000 free, also won the 500 free, racing to a time of 4:45.94.
Limestone's Sean Gunn helped slow Gardner-Webb's momentum in the 50 free, winning with a time of 21.09, but Gardner-Webb went 2-3-4 thanks to Anderson (21.79), Cole Hickey (22.05), and Nicholas Dyer (22.26) to add crucial points for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event.
Gardner-Webb responded with a decisive 1-2-3 finish in the 400 IM, getting great efforts from Cody Meyers, Josh Hanson, and Ryan Palmer to put the Runnin' Bulldogs in firm control of the meet. The senior Meyers won in 4:17.36, Hanson was 2nd with a time of 4:20.18, and Palmer took 3rd after finishing in 4:21.12.
In the next two events, the 100 fly and the 100 back, GWU stayed on top with wins from Brandon Searle and Bos. Searle, a junior from Melbourne, Fla., finished 1st with a time of 51.89 in the 100 fly, and Bos, a freshman from Holland, Mich., outraced the field in the 100 back to win with a time of 53.73.
Denmark (54.20) and Searle (55.13) took 2nd and 3rd in the 100 back for GWU.
Gardner-Webb will look to win its third consecutive dual meet on Saturday, January 18 in a meet at CCSA rival Davidson.
