Samotis and Craig Place First and Second in Pole Vault at Liberty Quad Meet

Lynchburng, Va. - Redshirt sophomore Tyler Samotis equaled his personal best to win the men's pole vault, and freshman Tyler Craig captured second place in the same event to lead Gardner-Webb's track & field squad at the Liberty Quad meet on Monday.

The meet, hosted by Liberty University, was rescheduled to Monday from its original date due to the recent winter storm.

In the men's pole vault, Samotis and Craig led Gardner-Webb, scoring a 1-2 finish in the men's pole vault. Samotis (Hendersonville, N.C.) led the way with a 1st place finish by clearing a personal best 4.90 m during the jump-off, while Craig (Talking Rock, Ga.) placed 2nd by clearing the 4.80 m mark.

In the women's pole vault, freshman Elise Moffatt (Kennessaw, Ga.) cleared 3.45 m to tie for 5th place, adding to the impressive weekend for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Freshman Jordan Davis (Atlanta, Ga.) reached finals in the women's 60 m Dash by running 8.08 during prelims and improved on her prelims time to place 7th with a finals time of 8.06.

Davis also placed 7th in the women's 200 m Dash, timing in at 26.46 to give the Runnin' Bulldogs another Top 8 individual finish.

In the women's high jump, freshman Kayin Mujahid placed 8th, clearing 1.55 m in the event. Mujahid (Philadelphia, Penn.) entered Monday's meet with a Top 5 high jump time in the Big South this season, having achieved her personal best mark (1.70 m) at the JDL Hilton Garden Invitational.

Sophomore Tyler Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) added a 10th place finish in the men's pole vault with a top height of 4.35 m.

In the men's long jump, junior Ben Bell (Greensboro, N.C.) led GWU with a 6th place showing, landing at a season best 6.22 m. Senior Tavarus Ferguson (Evans, Ga.) placed 8th with a distance of 5.95 m in the event.

Senior Mike McClay raced to a 4th place finish in the men's 3,000 m Run. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native achieved a season best time of 8:41.52 in the event and just missed overtaking VMI's Sean Helmke (8:41.10) for 3rd place.

With the Liberty Quad meet in the rearview mirror, Gardner-Webb's schedule continues to race towards the 2013-14 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championship meet (Feb. 28 - Mar. 1). GWU will compete in one final tune-up for the championship meet at the Appalachian State Pre-Conference Meet (Boone, N.C.), held Feb. 21-22.
