
Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis Drops Road Match at UNC Greensboro on Sunday

Greensboro, N.C. - A day after falling short in a grueling 4-3 match at Campbell, Gardner-Webb's men's tennis team competed at UNC Greensboro, dropping a 7-0 decision at the hands of the Spartans on Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
Gardner-Webb (3-8) saw the Spartans win the crucial opening doubles point, gaining an early 1-0 lead thanks to wins at No.'s 1-3 doubles. James Dougherty/Randy Phillips outlasted GWU's Ernest Alberch/Nikita Zverkov pairing, 8-5, at the No. 1 spot, and Ahmet Sarioglu/Daniel Mack of UNCG defeated A.J. Stillwell/Benjamin Kaszás by an 8-5 margin. Tyler Macy/Brendan Dempsey dropped an 8-3 decision versus the Spartans' No. 3 pairing of Nazhone Wilkins/Gaston Murray.
UNC Greensboro (4-2) carried the momentum into singles play where they were able to pick up wins at No.'s 1-6 singles.
The No. 5 singles match ended first, with Mack earning a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jonathan Walker, and the Spartans also picked up a win at No. 6 singles early with a 6-2, 6-2 win from Cameron Smith against GWU's Macy.
Zverkov pushed Dougherty at the No. 2 position before falling 6-4, 6-3, and UNCG prevailed at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win from Murray against Dempsey.
Alberch (Torello, Spain) won the first set in his No. 3 singles before seeing Phillips storm back to capture a hard-earned 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory at the spot.
Sarioglu staved off a strong start from Kaszás (Budapest, Hungary) to win at No. 1 singles by a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 margin to round out the scoring.
GWU turns around to compete on the third consecutive day, playing Monday at Belmont Abbey.
