March 11, 2014 | Track & Field
Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb track & field is sending a student-athlete to NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Sophomore Alex Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) threw a personal best 20.95 m in the men's weight throw at the JDL Hilton Garden Invitational earlier this Indoor season, qualifying to compete at the highest level of collegiate competition.
Young, rewarded with a trip to Albuquerque, N.M. and 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships for his efforts this season, needed to crack Division I's Top 16 among weight throw competitors in order to qualify.
Young's 20.95 m throw achieved at the two-day invitational (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) put him 9th at the time, and held its Top 16 ranking through March, as the sophomore heads in NCAA Championships ranked 16th in the event.
A first-time NCAA Championship participant, Young becomes the first Runnin' Bulldog to qualify for the elite meet since Elliot Haynie competed in the men's pole vault at 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
The 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will take place March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M. For information on the two-day meet, fans can access the links located at the top of the article.
