Gurser PK Lifts Gardner-Webb To Exhibition Victory Over King University

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- Patrick Gurser (Frankfurt, Germany) converted from the spot early in the first period to lift Gardner-Webb to a 1-0 exhibition victory over NCAA Division II foe King University on Friday evening at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Gurser, Ali Al-Gashamy (Kristiansand, Norway), Nathan Rose (Bristol, England) and Dustin Peyton (Greensboro, N.C.) each recorded two shots in the match, as Gardner-Webb outshot King by a 15-5 margin.
Matthew Swan (Newport, South Wales, UK), Tristan Lain (Indianapolis, Ind.), Nathan Cook (Casar, N.C.), and William Liles (Bailey, N.C.) combined for a two-save clean sheet between the pipes for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The lone goal of the match came late in the 12th minute, when King was called for a handball inside the area. Gurser stepped to the spot and calmly delivered a well-placed finish into the bottom corner to put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 1-0.
Gurser nearly doubled his account at the 50-minute mark, sending a shot just over the bar with a free kick. Rose and Peyton each forced the King keeper to make a stop in the final period, as Craig Swaby's (Ware, England) 72nd-minute effort was cut out by the defense on the way to goal.
Gardner-Webb opens the regular season on Friday, August 29 when its hosts Georgia Southern at 7:30 p.m. at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
