January 30, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
BOILING SPRINGS --- The Gardner-Webb lacrosse team has named freshman Cassidy McDowell (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Lindsey Lippert (Syracuse, N.Y.) as its captains for its inaugural season, announced head coach Jacquelyn Duggins Friday.
"I believe [Cassidy] McDowell and [Lindsey] Lippert exemplify what it means to be leaders, both on and off the field," praised Duggins. "I am very proud of them both. We have an amazing group of young ladies on this team. I am looking forward to seeing Cassidy and Lindsey lead this program in our first season."
McDowell, a freshman attack from Cincinnati, Ohio, played at Sycamore High School where she tallied 168 career assists and helped her team to the state championship in 2014. Lippert, a freshman midfielder from Syracuse, New York, was a two-time all-league selection at Westhill High School.
Both young ladies are devoted to playing an active role in the community as well, which can sometimes prove difficult given their busy schedules as Division I student-athletes.
McDowell has found time for many volunteer opportunities during her first year at Gardner-Webb, including serving as a lunch buddy at Boiling Springs Elementary while also participating in the Shelby Reads Program, Relay For Life and Habitat For Humanity. She is active in the community back in Cincinnati as well, starting an annual lacrosse game to benefit pancreatic cancer at Sycamore High School, which is now in its fourth year.
Lippert has spent quite a bit of time in the community too, traveling to Guatemala for a mission trip two years ago and plans to go on another such trip this summer. During her time at Gardner-Webb, she has volunteered at Shelby Elementary School, while helping with a 5k to raise awareness for autism.
Gardner-Webb takes the field for the first time on Saturday, February 14 when the Runnin' Bulldogs host Old Dominion at 1:00 pm at Spangler Stadium.
