
Sydney Marshall Selected as Big South Defensive Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE --- Gardner-Webb sophomore Sydney Marshall (Norcross, Ga.) was named the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday after posting 18 blocks and 18 kills to help lift the Runnin' Bulldogs to wins over Presbyterian and Winthrop last weekend.
Marshall put together a career weekend for the Runnin' Bulldogs, having a hand in 18 of Gardner-Webb's 34 blocks against Presbyterian and Winthrop. The sophomore kicked off the weekend with 10 kills and six blocks against Presbyterian, attacking at a .292 clip while adding two digs and a service ace.
She followed with a record-setting performance on Saturday against Winthrop, establishing a new school record for blocks in a five-set match with 12 stuffs as Gardner-Webb set a program record with 18 total blocks. The Norcross, Georgia native also added eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage, while tying Tyler Cockrell's overall single-match record for blocks.
Marshall's recognition marks the second time Gardner-Webb has earned a Big South Defensive Player of the Week honor after senior libero Anna Pashkova (Iowa City, Iowa) earned the honor after the opening weekend.
