
Gardner-Webb Track & Field Has High Hopes For Upcoming Big South Indoor Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Gardner-Webb will lace up its spikes at JDL Fast Track on Thursday and Friday as both teams compete in the 2015 Big South Conference Indoor Championships.
Head coach Brian Baker's squads have high hopes entering the competition, with a combined 21 student-athletes currently placing in the top-10 on Big South Conference performance lists. The meet begins at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 26 with the Heptathlon and will continue throughout the day – with the Distance Medley Relay closing Thursday's action at 6:35 pm.
Friday's action begins at 10:00 am as well.
On the men's side, Gardner-Webb has 12 different events with top-10 marks heading into the meet. The throws, a traditional strength for the Runnin' Bulldogs, have continued to perform well under new coach Robert Golabek. Sophomore Jordan Smith ranks second in the Big South in the shot put (15.75m) and fifth in the weight throw (16.24m). A.J. White ranks third in the shot put (15.66m) and both Nathan Padfield (3rd) and Carson Sears (7th) rank in the top-10 in the weight.
Freshman Marquel Woodard holds a pair of top-10 marks, ranking ninth in the 400m dash (50.16) and 10th in the 800m run (1:56.59). Gardner-Webb also has top-10 marks in the 60m dash (Malik Crawford, 8th), 60m hurdles (Josh Wembolua, 5th), high jump (Seaver Wait, 6th), long jump (Justin Jones, 10th) and heptathlon (Ben Bell, 4th).
On the women's side, senior Kristen Hurley has posted top-10 marks in three different events, ranking seventh in the 60m hurdles (9.02), ninth in the long jump (5.32m) and 3rd in the pentathlon (3,232 points).
The throws are a strong area for the GWU women as well, with Sarah Mitchell (4th shot put, 5th weight throw) and Diamond Reese (8th weight throw) leading the charge. Kayin Mujahid has the league's fourth-best mark in the high jump (1.63m), Elise Moffatt has the fifth-best mark in the pole vault (3.60m) and Megan Melton has the ninth-best mark in the pole vault (3.50m) heading into the championship meet.
