BOILING SPRINGS – Receiver Kenny Cook, Gardner-Webb's best NFL prospect in nearly a decade, impressed scouts in attendance Friday morning in Spangler Stadium during his Pro Day workout.
Official measurements and times from Friday's workout will not be made public at this time.
Cook (Cross Hill, S.C. / Clinton HS) worked out in front of the largest turnout of NFL personnel in Spangler Stadium since more than 20 were on hand for former All-America offensive guard Richard Williams' workout in 2002.
Cook and several of his former Gardner-Webb teammates went through traditional measurements, then took part in vertical jump, broad jump and bench press testing inside the GWU Football Center.
Next came on-field testing, and Cook drew high praise from scouts in attendance in the 40-yard dash – running faster than expected despite the 28 degree temperature and crosswind. Shuttles and a full package of receiving drills followed for Cook. The long, rangy wideout didn't drop any passes during those drills. Quarterback Lucas Beatty served as his trigger man.
"I felt good after [the workout]," said Cook. "I ran a fast time in the 40 and I think I did well overall. [The scouts] had good things to say afterward and I know they like what I can do. My measurements have been good, so it was great to add a faster 40 yard time."
Cook, who has been in Miami, Fla., for the past month workout out with former NFL receiver Chris Chambers of Chambers Fitness, will continue to train in South Carolina – staying in shape for private workouts that await leading up to April's NFL Draft.
Cook has already earned his college degree, graduating from Gardner-Webb in December (Communications Studies). He earned FCS All-America honors in 2013 and 2014 and was a three-time All-Big South Conference choice at receiver.
Cook finished his career with 188 catches for 2,432 yards and 21 touchdowns – catching at least one pass in each of his 33 career games. He caught a career-high 76 passes for 1,008 yards and nine scores in 2013, becoming the first receiver at GWU since 1992 to top 1,000 yards through the air.
Cook followed that up with 64 catches for 758 yards and five scores in just 10 games as a senior. His 5.7 career receptions per game set a new Gardner-Webb record. He and Hall of Famer Rodney Robinson finished tied for the most receptions over a three-year career.
The 2015 NFL Draft will be held in Chicago, Ill., from Thursday April 30 through Saturday April 2.
