Men's Tennis Wins Second Straight Match Thursday With Win Over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural

CAYCE, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team (5-8) won their second match in a row by defeating Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (4-5) 5-2 Thursday afternoon.
Three matches that were decided in the third set was the difference maker in the match and the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to secure victories in all three of the contests.
After Jonathan Walker gave Gardner-Webb the lead 2-1 getting the best of Colton Phillips in the No. 6 position (6-3, 6-2), Ray Donovan defeated Paul Hogan (6-3, 7-6) at the No. 4 slot tying the match back up.
The next three matches proved to be crucial ones, and the Runnin' Bulldogs prevailed.
Freshmen Maximilian Scholl once again came up big for Gardner-Webb, defeating Elvyn Guyen (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) at No. 1 singles.
Also winning in three sets were Adam Schmidt and Yaroslav Prostakov. After falling behind one set to none, Schmidt battled back and put away Eymeric Hevalier (6-7, 6-2, 6-2) at No. 5 singles. Prostakov picked up the win defeating Aykut Pturahman (6-4, 6-7, 7-6) in the No. 3 singles spot.
Also winning for the Dogs was Nikita Zverkov as he finished off Deepak Vishavkama in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) at No. 2 singles.
Gardner-Webb Coach Mike Griffith was very pleased with how his team responded in the singles portion of the match. "In the singles matches, I felt our patience and shot selection overcame their talent."
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural did take the early lead winning the double's portion of the match prior to the single's dominance by the Runnin' Bulldogs. The lone doubles winner for Gardner-Webb was Schmidt and Johan Fors at No. 3 doubles, defeating Pturahman and Donovan 6-2.
The Dogs will be back on the courts Sunday against Big South Conference foe Radford as they search for their third straight victory. The contest is set to begin at 1 p.m.
