Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell scored four unearned runs in the first inning and plated 12 runs in the final four innings to take a 17-4 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
The loss was the fifth in a row in league play for Gardner-Webb (22-12, 2-6 Big South), with all five coming away from home.
After three errors and a pair of hits led to Campbell's four-run first inning, Gardner-Webb finally got on the board in the fourth. Taylor Fisher walked and sprinted all the way around from first to score on Paul Trick's double – trimming Campbell's lead to 4-1.
The Fighting Camels (18-15, 5-3 Big South) got that run back in the bottom of the fourth, then started its late burst in with two runs in the fifth, two more in the sixth and three in the seventh. A five-run explosion in the eighth marked the final scoring for the home team.
Matt Simmons doubled to lead off the sixth inning and scored on Tyler Best's RBI single up the middle to cut Campbell's lead at the time to 7-2. Danny Sullivan's solo home run in the seventh was Gardner-Webb's third run of the game.
Pinch hitter Andrew Massey singled in the top of the ninth and scored the final run of the game on Evan Hyett's RBI double into the right centerfield gap.
Grant Yost (4-2) picked up the win for Campbell, going the distance on the mound. Yost fanned 10, walked two and allowed four runs on eight hits.
Campbell had 17 hits on the day. Anthony Lopez (3-for-4, HR, 4 RBI), Drew Butler (3-for-4, RBI) and Junior Snow (3-for-5, RBI) led the way.
Jeremy Walker (4-4) was tagged with the mound loss for GWU, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work. Walker struck out seven Campbell batters. The bullpen was touched for eight runs in the final three innings.
Gardner-Webb had eight hits, with Trick (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) the lone man with two safeties. Sullivan's home run was his team-leading fifth of the season.
The two teams will meet Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm in the series finale.
