BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team took High Point University to overtime tonight in a Big South match-up at Greene-Harbison Stadium, but fell by a score of 1-0.
Tonight's match was GWU's second straight overtime effort as they claimed victory over Radford this past Saturday by a score of 3-2 in 2OT.
Early in the match, the High Point offense controlled a majority of the possession, yet was unable to convert on any scoring opportunities. In the first period, the Panthers took eight shots, with three on goal. Michele Micciche paced the Panthers offense in the first period notching four shots.
Gardner-Webb responded as both
Stina Kleppe and
Samuelle Grove recorded the Runnin' Bulldogs only shots of the period. Grove notched the lone shot on goal for Gardner-Webb in the period.
After 45 minutes of play the game remained scoreless. In the second period, the game saw more offense yet each team failed to score a go-ahead goal. The Panthers tallied 12 shots in the second period while three were on goal. Gardner-Webb rebutted High Point's efforts with eight shots, and two on goal by way of
Annie Ross and
Samuelle Grove.
In overtime, High Point scored a golden goal at the 99:50 mark as she converted the corner kick from Taylor Romano on a header that found its way passed Gardner-Webb goalkeeper,
Keely Brown.
Despite falling 1-0, Gardner-Webb 'keeper
Keely Brown remained steady in goal for the 'Dawgs as she made six saves. High Point goalkeeper Alex Hank mirrored Brown's efforts as she also made six saves in the match.
With tonight's loss Gardner-Webb falls to (3-10-1, 1-3-1 BSC), while High Point climbs to (7-7-1, 4-1-1 BSC). The Runnin' Bulldogs are back in action this Saturday, Oct. 14 at 4:00 PM as they travel to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on conference opponent Campbell University.
