Radford's Roberts Scores Four Goals as Highlanders Top 'Dawgs 5-3

RADFORD, V.A. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team fell in an offensive shootout today, as conference opponent Radford defeated the Gardner-Webb 5-3. Kieran Roberts of Radford had a massive game for the Highlanders scoring four goals.
 
Just three minutes into the match, Radford's Sivert Daehlie opened the scoring as he received a low cross from Evan Szklennik and knocked it in from six yards out.
 
Leading 1-0 in the 26th minute, Kieran Roberts pushed one passed the Gardner-Webb 'keeper as the Highlanders capitalized on a Gardner-Webb turnover.
 
Just before half, Gardner-Webb countered Radford's scoring efforts bringing them within one as Roman Eddleman took a shot from 18 yards out which made its way past the Radford 'keeper. Eddleman's goal was good for his fourth of the season as Marc-Kevin Schwenk was credited with the assist.
 
In the 49th minute, Kieran Roberts made his presence known again as he scored his second goal of the match for Radford. Roberts found the back of the net unassisted to give RU the 3-1 lead.
 
After 27 scoreless minutes, Kieran Roberts found the back of the net again for his third goal of the night as he again scored unassisted.
 
Again, as the match drew near completion, Roberts found the back of the net for his fourth and final goal of the night. Neil Martorana sent the cross into the box for Radford which allowed Roberts to beat the Gardner-Webb 'keeper to the low left corner of the net.
 
In the final two minutes of the match, Severin Soerlie of Gardner-Webb scored two unanswered goals. At the 88:16 mark, Soerlie sent his shot past the goalkeeper over the top. Roman Eddleman was credited with the assist.
 
Shortly after, Soerlie found the back of the net again for the 'Dawgs as Jack Hoey sent a long ball through for Soerlie which he was able to convert again for a goal.
 
Gardner-Webb accounted for 14 shots in the match with seven on goal. Behind Soerlie's two goals, Gardner-Webb's Magnus Moldjord also added two shots on goal for GWU.
 
The Highlander offense was able to get off 18 shots in the match, with eight on goal as Kieran Roberts' offensive efforts pushed Radford to victory.
 
Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Jacob Beyer tallied three saves in 90 minutes of play. Nicolas Mertzokat of Radford made four saves in goal tonight for the Highlanders.
 
Following tonight's match, Gardner-Webb falls to (5-5-1, 2-2-0 BSC), while Radford climbs to (7-4-1, 3-1-1 BSC). The Runnin' Bulldogs are back in action as they welcome USC Upstate to Greene-Harbison Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 6:00 PM.
