Runnin' Bulldogs Fall to Campbell, Old Dominion in Buies Creek

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb swim team traveled to Campbell University to take on the Camels and Old Dominion University in a tri-meet this afternoon. The Runnin' Bulldogs women's team topped Old Dominion by a score of 143-119, yet fell to Campbell 151-111. The men's team fell to ODU 155-102.
"This has been a very taxing week emotionally, and it showed in the pool today. We fought hard for three hours and that's a huge positive. Our team is working very hard. There is a new commitment level," said head coach Mike Simpson on his team following the meet.
Gardner-Webb shined in the 200-yard IM as the Runnin' Bulldogs combination on Jordan Mintz, Justin Conklin, Cameron Pou and Dalton Myers claimed the top four spots.
Jordan Mintz continued his strong showing today as he also took first in the 200-yard breaststroke for his second victory of the day as he completed in a time of 2:08.80.
Peter Wakeley also placed first for Gardner-Webb in the 200-yard butterfly as he finished with a time of 1:58.55, winning the event by nearly a two second margin.
On the women's side Jessi Snover and Mary Traylor each took first place in their events. Snover won the 100-yard butterful in a time of 56.33, while Traylor won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:10.16.
In the 200-yard Medley Relay, both the men's and women's team placed second. On the women's side, Campbell barely edged by Lili Toth, Jessi Snover, Bethany Leap, and Audrey Robinson finishing with a time of 1:46.91 while GWU came in at 1:47.41. For the men, Cullen Fields, Jordan Mintz, Andrew Knudsen, and Eli Coan finished in second place with a time of 1:36.69.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, both Morgan Vandershaaf and Peter Wakeley finished in third place as Vanderschaaf completed in a time of 10:48.94, while Wakeley completed the event in a time of 9:54.67.
In a string of second place finishes, Jessi Snover continued a successful day in the pool for Gardner-Webb as she placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.40 behind Campbell University's Silina. Lili Toth also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a tie of 59.24 while Campbell's Mahone narrowly claimed victory coming in at 59.04. Cullen Fields also participated in the 100-yard freestyle on the men's side mirroring Toth's finish as he came in second place with a time of 54.29.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Bethany Leap placed second in the event with a time of 2:22.55. Today's meet was Leap's first meet with Gardner-Webb after transferring from Texas, but missed last week's dual-meet versus UNC Asheville.
In a quick turnaround, Gardner-Webb returns to the pool tomorrow as they travel to Greenville, N.C. for a meet against ECU, William and Mary and Campbell.
