
Smith, Henry Lead Late Charge As GWU Men's Golf Takes Second At Elon

BURLINGTON, N.C. – Steffen Smith and Jonathan Henry led a late charge for Gardner-Webb Tuesday to lift the Runnin' Bulldogs to a second-place finish at the 2017 Elon Phoenix Invitational.
GWU, the defending tournament champions, pushed host Elon down the stretch before the Phoenix eventually held on to win by four strokes. The tournament was played at the Alamance Country Club (Par 71, 6,867 yards).
Smith fired a low round of 65 on Tuesday, finishing at three-under for the tournament (74-71-65-210). The former Greater Atlanta Christian standout finished in a tie for 10th individually. He was at his best on Par 3 holes, tying for the tournament lead with a 2.50 scoring average. Smith ranked second over 54 holes with eight birdies
Gardner-Webb shot 274 as a team in the final round, finishing at 7-under par for the 54-hole tournament. That put the 'Dogs nine strokes in front of George Washington (+2) and 10 strokes in front of George Mason (+3).
Henry was 3-under par for the third round, carding a 68. He finished at even par for the tournament and pulled into a tie for 14th individually (74-71-68-213).
Purdue transfer Chad Phillips finished in a tie for 20th, shooting 1-under in the second round and even par over his final 18 holes (73-70-71-214). Aaron Thomas (78-69-70-217) and Patrick Wu (69-74-74-217) tied for 35th individually.
Each of Gardner-Webb's five golfers carded at least one round under par for the tournament. The Runnin' Bulldogs held a sizable lead statistically, pacing the tournament with 27 birdies. Western Carolina was second with 18 birdies. GWU also led the event in Par 5 scoring (4.20 / -12).
Gardner-Webb will be back in action this weekend for its final fall tournament. The Runnin' Bulldogs will tee it up at the 2017 Camden Intercollegiate, hosted by South Carolina, on October 21-22.
