Gardner-Webb and Longwood Play to 1-1 Draw in Double Overtime on Senior Day

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team squared off with Big South opponent, Longwood today as they played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime.
 
Prior to the match, the team's five seniors: Annie Ross, Jane Perrin Mayer, Jessica Ferguson, Irina Briquet and Emily Burton were honored on the field for Senior Day.
 
"I am very proud of our effort tonight. I thought we played with a lot of energy and our seniors led the charge," said head coach Mike Varga.
 
"Jessica Ferguson was excellent for us up top and her hard work paid off with the goal," Varga continued, as Ferguson gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the 1-0 lead in the 70th minute.
 
"Annie Created problems with her work rate tonight as well as she threatened the goal as few times. Jane Perrin was solid as usual in the back as well," said Varga on some of his seniors.
 
As Ferguson's goal in the second period gave Gardner-Webb the 1-0 lead, Longwood responded with three minutes left in the match as Kelly Almedi found the back of the net on the assist from Kathryn Miller.
 
With the game tied at 1 at the end of regulation, the game went into double overtime, ending in a tie as neither team was able to notch a golden goal.
 
Gardner-Webb recorded 10 shots in the match, with six on goal, as Jane Perrin Mayer led the way with two. Longwood tallied 13 shots, with five on goal.
 
Keely Brown was strong in goal tonight making several impressive saves, as she tallied four on the night. Longwood keeper, Maria Kirby recorded five saves while allowing one goal.
 
"Tonight's draw locks us into the postseason," said Varga. "Now we (wait) and see where we are in the standings after Tuesday, and get ready for the tournament," he continued.
 
With tonight's draw, Gardner-Webb now stands at (4-11-2, 2-4-2 BSC) while Longwood holds a (11-4-3) record.
 
Gardner-Webb is back in action at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 24 as they welcome UNC Asheville to Greene-Harbison Stadium for their final regular season home game of the year.
