October 02, 2017 | Men's Golf
SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb men's golf sizzled on the first day of the 2017 Hummingbird Intercollegiate, carding a first round 275 and finishing the day with a 19-stroke lead over second-place Elon and Central Arkansas.
The Runnin' Bulldogs did not finish the second round, due to darkness, as Monday morning's first round was delayed two hours due to frost on the 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley course.
Gardner-Webb was spectacular in the opening round, posting the second-best round in tournament history – tied with Vanderbilt in 2008 – to roll to a quick, 14-stroke lead over Elon and the rest of the 13-team field.
Veteran Aaron Thomas turned in a 66 after 18 holes, which is tied for the fourth-lowest round in Hummingbird tournament history. Newcomer Patrick Wu (67) and sophomore Steffen Smith (67) were very close behind Thomas' red-hot opening round, with Jonathan Henry (75) and Jake Kennedy (75) rounding out a strong effort for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Thomas holed out six birdies in the opening round – including three on his first six holes – to finish at 66. He shot a even-par 71 in the second round, using four birdies and an eagle to overcome six bogeys, and sits in sixth place individually heading into Tuesday's final round.
Wu stayed hot in the second round, finishing 15 holes before the round was suspended. After recording six birdies over the first 18 holes of his day, Wu started the second round on fire – carding four birdies over his first six holes – and shooting par on the next nine holes to sit at 4-under par with three holes remaining in the round.
His effort put Wu in a tie for first place overall at 8-under for the tournament.
Smith also continued to shine in the second round, finishing 12 holes before heading into the clubhouse at 6-under for the day. The standout sophomore also had six birdies in the first round, and added four over his first 12 holes to sit in a tie for fourth individually.
Henry (T42) and Kennedy (T48) each improved on their first round scores to help GWU extend its team lead. Kennedy finished his second 18 holes, with Henry finishing the 15th hole before darkness became an issue.
Gardner-Webb will continue the quest for its first team trophy of the 2017 fall season on Tuesday at 9:00 am.
