NORMAN, Okla. – The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) will induct four coaches in its 2017 Hall of Fame Class, including Gardner-Webb's legendary Dr. Garland Allen.
The group will be officially inducted at the GCAA Hall of Fame Reception and Awards Banquet on Monday, December 11, in Las Vegas.
Dr. Allen started his career at Gardner-Webb in 1961 during the junior college era – teaching history and serving as an academic counselor. His exceptional coaching career got its start in 1962, when he embarked on a 27-year journey with the Bulldogs.
The Gardner-Webb men's golf team made nine appearances in the NAIA National Tournament under Allen's guidance, including back-to-back NAIA National Championships in 1976 and 1977. Allen was honored as NAIA National Coach of the Year following both of those seasons and continued to direct the Bulldogs' program until his retirement in 1989.
Gardner-Webb edged rival Elon to win the 1976 title at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C., and cruised to a 10-stroke win over Sam Houston State in 1977 at the Bay Valley Country Club in Michigan.
In addition to his coaching duties, Allen served as the acting chairman of the religion department from 1962-1964 and continued to teach on campus. Upon retirement, the Garland H. Allen Golf Scholarship was established by the Gardner-Webb Bulldog Club in his honor.
Dr. Allen passed away at the age of 91 on June 3, 2014. He was inducted into the Gardner-Webb Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.
A testament to Allen's prowess as a coach, his golfers were named NAIA All-America nine times. Five of his former golfers – Terry Florence (1998), Jimmy Franklin (2000), Wayne Myers (2004), Steve Sherman (2001) and Zim Zimmerman (1991) – joined Allen in the Gardner-Webb Athletics Hall of Fame.
