October 03, 2017 | Men's Golf
SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb men's golf held off a strong challenge from Elon Tuesday and set a new 54-hole tournament record to win the 2017 Hummingbird Intercollegiate.
The Runnin' Bulldogs won their first team title of the fall season, carding a 297 on the final day of action to finish at +4 for the event (275-284-297-856). That kept Gardner-Webb three strokes in front of Elon, despite the Phoenix shooting a Tuesday-best 282.
Morehead State (+17) and Central Arkansas (+17) tied for third and Radford (+24) finished fifth.
The tournament was played on the 6,767-yard (Par 71) course at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Gardner-Webb was led by newcomer Patrick Wu (67-68-72-207), who finished in sole possession of fifth individually. Wu led Gardner-Webb in the second round with a 68, then shot a team-best 72 (+1) on Tuesday.
Aaron Thomas continued his strong fall season, carding a 74 on Tuesday to finish in eighth position. Thomas (66-71-74-211) led the field with a first-round 66 on Monday morning.
Steffan Smith tied for 13th overall with a 54-hole score of 215 (67-71-77). Jonathan Henry (75-74-74-223) tied for 37th and Jake Kennedy (75-74-78-227) tied for 58th in a strong field of competitors.
Kennedy was the best golfer in par 3 scoring for the event, finishing at 1-under par on those holes over three rounds. Thomas finished second in the tournament in par 5 scoring (-6) – and was one of three GWU players to finish with double figures birdies.
Gardner-Webb led the field as a team with 50 birdies, led by Wu (14), Thomas (12) and Smith (12).
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on October 7-8, traveling to the 2017 Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament will be a homecoming for GWU head coach Tee Burton, who was a two-time All-America golfer for the Tar Heels during his collegiate career.
