David Efianayi scored a game-high 16 points and Gardner-Webb shot 52.5 percent from the floor Wednesday night, cruising to an 82-60 win over Wofford in a men's basketball charity exhibition game.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Samaritan's Purse Disaster Relief.
The Runnin' Bulldogs used a 22-8 run midway through the first half to build a comfortable lead, going up 30-20 on back-to-back jumpers from
Liam O'Reilly with 5:00 left before intermission.
Wofford trimmed the lead back to four on a three-pointer from Donovan Theme-Love with 3:26 left, but Gardner-Webb responded with jumpers from
Eric Jamison and O'Reilly – and a three-pointer from
Jaheam Cornwall – to push the lead to 39-28 with 1:33 left in the half. Wofford freshman Keve Aluma connected on a free throw with 45 seconds remaining for a 39-29 score at the break.
Gardner-Webb came out on fire in the second half, making four-straight shots to go up 49-31 on a three-pointer by forward
Patrick Zeck with 17:13 left in the game. That forced a Terriers' timeout, and the visitors responded out of that break with a 14-2 run to trim the lead all the way down to 51-45 with 13:43 to play in the game.
Six different Wofford players scored during the spurt, with Fletcher McGee connecting on a pair of mid-range jumpers to spark the rally.
Efianayi capped that Wofford run with a layup of his own, sparking an 11-4 run for the host team that put Gardner-Webb up 64-49 with 8:30 remaining. The lead grew to as many as 18 points moments later and remained in double figures the rest of the way.
Gardner-Webb scored 46 points in the paint on Wednesday, led by Zeck's 12 points off the bench. The 6-foot-7 sophomore was 4-of-6 from from the floor, made all three of his free throws, blocked a shot and pulled down seven rebounds in 24 minutes.
Zeck's production was part of an excellent effort from its reserves, which saw the Runnin' Bulldogs outscore Woford 44-14 in bench points. In addition to Zeck, Gardner-Webb got nine points from O'Reilly off the bench, eight points from Jamison, seven from Cornwall and five from
Brandon Miller.
Cornwall, a freshman point guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., added five assists in 18 minutes.
Jamaal Robateau overcame a tough shooting night with a fine overall floor game, scoring seven points, pulling down nine rebounds, dishing off a pair of assists and recording two blocked shots. His defensive effort included limiting All-SoCon guard Fletcher McGee to eight points on 3-of-13 shooting.
Turner added seven points on a perfect night shooting from his point guard spot.
Gardner-Webb shot 32-of-61 as a team (52.5 percent), including an 18-of-30 effort in the second half (60.0 percent). GWU also made 10-of-13 free throws (76.9 percent), held a 36-30 edge on the backboards and enjoyed a positive assist-turnover ratio (15/11).
Wofford shot 58.6 percent in the second half, but fell too far behind with a 36.0 effort over the first 30 minutes – finishing at 48.1 percent for the game (26-of-54). Center Matthew Pegram had a team-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Hoover added 14 markers on 5-of-8 accuracy.
Aluma came off the bench to contribute solidly with nine points, seven rebounds and a block in 16 minutes. Theme-Love scored nine points and the duo of Cameron Jackson and McGee each had eight points.
Gardner-Webb opens the 2017-2018 regular season with a difficult road trip, beginning on Friday, November 10 at No. 12 Miami (Fla.). Tipoff is set for 8:00 pm in Coral Gables (ACC Digital Network).
Wofford opens its regular season on November 10 as well, hosting 2017 Final Four participant South Carolina for the inaugural game at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
