GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Graduate transfer Egor Koulechov scored 34 points and No. 7 Florida used a barrage of three-pointers to key a 116-74 win over Gardner-Webb Monday night.
Gardner-Webb (0-1) lost its second game – both to top-15 teams – of a very difficult week-long road trip that wraps up Wednesday at UCF. Monday marked the first time GWU had allowed 100 points in a regulation game since December 19, 2009 at Penn State – a stretch of 251 games.
Junior forward D.J. Laster finished with his first career double-double for the Runnin' Bulldogs, scoring 19 points to go with 10 rebounds inside. Freshman point guard
Jaheam Cornwall scored 10 of his 18 points in the second half, making 7-of-10 shots (3-of-5 from long range).
David Efianayi added 13 points for Gardner-Webb, adding five rebounds from his guard spot.
The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 42.4 percent from the floor in the game, but made just 6-of-20 from deep for the game (30.0 percent).
Florida (1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in its season opener, getting an alley oop dunk off the opening tip, but Gardner-Webb gathered itself and pulled even.
After Gardner-Webb took a 14-13 lead with 12:04 on the first half clock on a transition layup by Cornwall, the Gators began to knock down perimeter jumpers and used those three-pointers to ignite an 11-0 run over the next 2:29 to seize control of the game for good.
That 11-0 surge stretched to a 27-5 burst over the next 5:53, as the Gators continued to drain long distance treys to go up 40-19 with 5:49 remaining.
After Cornwall drained a trey of his own and converted an old fashioned three-point play to cut the lead back to 42-27 with 3:29 left in the half, Florida knocked down a pair of treys to power another 8-0 run to go up 50-27.
The Gators led 55-32 at the break after knocking down 10-of-21 from long distance in the opening stanza.
Gardner-Webb had little answer in the second half, as Florida used a 16-3 run over a four-minute stretch to push its lead to 79-42 with 11:58 remaining in the game. The Runnin' Bulldogs missed seven consecutive shots and went scoreless for nearly four minutes during that spurt.
In addition to Koulechov, Florida got 16 points from Jalen Hudson, 14 from Deaundrae Ballard and 13 from Mike Okauru, with Koulechov, Hudson and Okauru combining to make 11 of the Gators' 15 three-pointers (15-of-29, 51.7 percent).
Florida shot a sizzling, and fast-paced, 69.0 percent (20-of-29) in the second half.
Gardner-Webb will turn its attention to UCF on Wednesday night (Nov. 15), traveling to Orlando to take on the Golden Knights at 7:00 pm. The game will air live on ESPN3 (WatchESPN).
