LYNCHBURG, V.A. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team saw their 2017 campaign end this afternoon as they fell to fourth-seeded Liberty University in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Tournament, 3-0.
After 45 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless. The Flames gained momentum in the 65
th minute as they scored their first of three goals in the second period. Ruben Garcia lofted his pass from the right sideline into the center of the box finding Kevin Mendoza for the header, to put the Flames up 1-0.
Liberty's Mendoza again found the back of the net in the 84
th minute giving the Flames a late push to secure a 2-0 lead. Geovanny Murillo and Pepe Segarra were credited with the double assist.
In the final moments of the match, Tresor Mbuyu capped the scoring as the Runnin' Bulldogs clearing attempt fell to Pepe Segarra as he would put it into the box finding Mbuyu for the final goal of the match. Mbuyu was the lone goal scorer for Liberty on Sept. 26 as his goal in overtime led to the Flames 1-0 victory.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were held to 13 shots, with just two on goal in their season finale.
Magnus Moldjord, a Second-Team All-Conference and All-Academic selection paced the way for Gardner-Webb as he tallied four shots, with one on goal. Ishmael Guerrero recorded the only other shot on goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Liberty offense accounted for 17 shots in the match with seven on goal. Tresor Mbuyu led the way as she recorded five shots, two shots on goal, and one goal for the Flames. Pepe Segarra was also a key component in the match for Liberty today as he took three shots, with one on goal and added two assists.
Gardner-Webb took four corners in the match while Liberty was awarded six. The Runnin' Bulldogs were also flagged offside once in the match.
This season, the team captured several great accomplishments. On Sept. 23, they took down No. 8 Furman, 5-4 on the road in double overtime. Currently, the Runnin' Bulldogs rank fourth in the country with 2.63 goal scored per game. The Runnin' Bulldogs also recorded three shutouts on the season coming against UNC Asheville, Winthrop and VMI. Seven different Runnin' Bulldogs also earned All-Conference recognition for their efforts this season.
Gardner-Webb concludes their season at the (8-7-2, 4-3-1 BSC) mark following up their (4-11-1, 2-5-1 BSC) campaign from just a year ago.
