BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Tierra Huntsman scored a career-high 26 points and pulled down a career-best 12 boards to lead Gardner-Webb to a 73-55 win over the visiting Wofford Terriers on Tuesday evening inside Paul Porter Arena.
The redshirt-senior led Gardner-Webb (6-2) in scoring, earning 26 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-6 from long distance. She also was 8-of-9 at the free throw line. Huntsman's 12 rebounds, all defensive, gave her a second-consecutive double-double on the year.
GWU made 28-of-65 attempts for the game, shooting at a 43.1 percentage, while Wofford (4-4) was just 23-76, shooting 30.3 percent from the floor.
Alexus Hill added 19 points for the Runnin' Bulldogs on an 8-of-15 performance, while
Savannah Plentovich also reached double-digits with 12 points on the evening.
Wofford was led in scoring by Cairo Booker, scoring 19 points on 9-of-24 shooting. Da'Ja Green also had 10 points on the evening.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have now won four straight contests, the longest win streak for GWU since a six game win streak during Big South Conference play during the 2015-16 season.
The Terriers would jump out to an early 3-0 lead to start the game, but Gardner-Webb would respond with eight unanswered points to lead by five points, 8-3, after a jumper by
Savannah Plentovich with 5:05 on the clock. The Runnin' Bulldogs would lead by as many as six points in the period after a three-pointer by
Tierra Huntsman set the score at 15-9 with 1:11 to go, but the Terriers would make two late baskets to pull within two points at 15-13 at the end of the opening quarter.
The two teams would trade baskets at the onset of the second period, with Wofford tying the game at 17-17 with 7:06 on the clock after a layup by Anna Claire Atha. The Runnin' Bulldogs would then seize control of the game, going on a 14-4 run that was capped by back-to-back three pointers from Plentovich and Hill that gave GWU a 31-31 advantage with 4:04 to go. Both teams would trade a pair of layup throughout the remainder of the half, as Gardner-Webb would lead Wofford by a score of 35-25 at the break.
GWU would expand its lead to as many as 16 points in the third period after a mid-range jumper by Hill set the score at 53-37 with 1:02 on the clock, but Marissa Bayer would answer on the following possession with a driving layup to set the score at 53-39 at the end of the third period.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would again expand their lead in the fourth period, building a 20 point lead with 1:57 to go after consecutive layups by
Celia Tibbs and
Ky'Asia Stanford set the score at 71-51. After back-to-back baskets by the Terriers,
Nia Lee would score a layup in the final seconds to set the final score at 73-55.
Gardner-Webb will take a break for end-of-semester exams before returning to action on Friday, December 15 at Davidson. The game is scheduled for an 11:30 am tip.
