Runnin' Bulldogs Fall to Canisius, 10-7, in 12 Innings Friday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb hit three home runs during Friday night's game, but a couple of costly errors doomed the Runnin' Bulldogs as the team dropped a 10-7 decision to Canisius in 12 innings.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-1) led 6-5 in the top of the ninth inning, but Canisius (1-0) rallied, putting runners on second and third with one out in the frame, and a sacrifice fly by Christ Conley tied the game at 6-6.

The Griffs would go take a lead in the top of the 11th inning after Jake Lumley would score on an error, but Gardner-Webb would answer in the bottom half of the inning, as Matt Simmons would launch a solo blast over the centerfield wall on the first pitch of the frame to tie the game at 7-7. 

Corey Howard would reach on a walk in the next at bat, and would get to third base with two outs, but the Diamond 'Dogs were unable to bring the game-winning run across the plate.

In the top of the 12th inning, Canisius would load the bases with one out and would score two runs on an error and one more after a sacrifice fly to take a three-run advantage at 10-7. 

Collin Thacker would lead off the bottom of the inning with a single through the left side, and would reach scoring position with one out, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would be unable to answer.

The Diamond' Dogs strung together 13 hits throughout the game, including three home runs.  In his first at bat at Gardner-Webb, Mickey Dugan hit a 2-run home run over the right field fence in the second inning and Mason Fox hit a 2-run blast off of the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning to go along with Simmons' homer in the 11th. 

Fox paced the Runnin' Bulldogs offensively Friday evening, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and scoring two runs.  Thacker also collected multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base.

Cooper Devine would take the loss for Gardner-Webb, tossing the last inning with one strikeout.  Starter Wil Sellers hurled 5.0 innings, fanning four batters while allowing two earned runs in the no decision. 

Tyler Smith earned the win for the Griffs, tossing 2.1 innings with four strikeouts and one earned run.  Zachary Sloan lasted 4.1 innings in the start, allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts.

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action Saturday afternoon, hosting Canisius in a doubleheader beginning at noon at John Henry Moss Stadium / Bill Masters Field.
