Gardner-Webb Falls at Davidson, 11-2, Wednesday Night

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb had three extra base hits on the evening, but a eight-run inning by Davidson in the bottom of the seventh doomed the Runnin' Bulldogs, who fell by a 11-2 score on Wednesday evening.

Davidson (8-5) led off the bottom of the seventh inning with two straight base hits off of Gardner-Webb (5-9) reliever Landon Mitchell to put runners on second and third with no outs.  Tyler Johnson came out of the bullpen to replace Mitchell and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases.  Johnson struck out the next batter to record the first out of the frame, but walked the next two batters to drive in two runs.

Taylor Goodwin entered the game to replace Johnson, who walked the first batter he faced to drive in another run with one out.  That was followed by a two-run double by Cam Johnson and a two-run single by Will Robertson to give the Wildcats seven runs in the inning with just one out.  Goodwin was able to record the second out before allowing a single to right field by Brian Fortier to drive in an additional run.  Davidson's Eric Jones hit a line drive to end the inning

The Runnin' Bulldogs scored the first run of the evening in the top of the fourth inning as Paul Trick doubled into deep center field to score Justin Kunz from first base, giving GWU the early 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats answered in the bottom half of the frame when Brian Fortier led off the inning with a home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1.

Davidson plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run double by Jones with two outs to take the lead at 3-1.

The Diamond 'Dogs would respond in the top of the sixth as Matt Simmons would double down the right field line, followed by single by Corey Howard to center field that send Simmons across the plate to pull GWU within one run at 3-2.

Gardner-Webb would only have one more base hit on the evening, as Kunz would single to center field in the top of the eighth.

GWU would collect seven base hits throughout the night, let by Simmons who was 2-for-3 with a double.

Davidson tallied 11 base knocks, with Fortier (3-of-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 runs) leading the way.

Starter Isaac Campbell took the loss for Gardner-Webb, tossing 4.1 innings with four strikeouts while allowing three earned runs.

Josh Hudson earned the win for the Wildcats, lasting 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts, allowing just one earned run.

Gardner-Webb will remain on the road, traveling to Johnson City, Tenn. to face ETSU in a three-game weekend series.  The first game will take place Friday evening at 6:30 pm.
