BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb got off to a hot start Wednesday night, plating four runs in the first inning to go on to a 5-0 win over visiting Furman.
With the win, Gardner-Webb (21-19) snapped Furman's (19-21) eight-game winning streak. It was also the first shutout win for the Runnin' Bulldogs since the opening weekend when GWU defeated Canisius by a 5-0 score on February 19.
The Gardner-Webb bats were active early as the Diamond 'Dogs produced four hits in the opening inning.
Paul Trick led off the frame with a single to left field, which was shortly followed by a two-run home run to center field by Collin Thacker, his fourth of the season.
Danny Sullivan would reach on a fielding error by Furman third baseman Dillon Love, which was followed by a two-run shot to right field by Chandler Redmond, his eleventh home run of the season.
Matt Simmons would also earn a base hit in the inning, sending the ball deep into right field. All nine GWU batters would step up to the plate in the opening inning
Neither team would produce much offense until the seventh inning, as Gardner-Webb would tack on an additional run on a RBI walk by Sullivan off of Furman reliever Heath Hawkins.
GWU loaded the bases earlier in the inning after single by Mickey Dugan, followed by a double to left field by Justin Kunz, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Thacker would then be intentionally walked by Billy Greenfield to load the bases before the Paladins brought in Hawkins.
The Paladins would threaten in the ninth inning, earning two base hits off of GWU reliever Wil Sellers, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would keep the Paladins off the board to seal the shutout win.
Isaac Campbell (1-4) shined in his first collegiate victory, hurling 5.2 innings, scattering four base hits with one strikeout. Taylor Goodwin, Jarrett Thompson, and Sellers each appeared in the late innings to preserve the win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs tallied eight base hits, with Redmond (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Kunz (2-for-4, 2B) each earning multiple hits.
Jake Crawford (1-3) took the loss for Furman, lasting 4.0 innings while allowing four runs on five base hits.
The Paladins had six hits, with Sky Overton (3-for-4, 2 2B) leading that effort.
The Runnin' Bulldogs step back into Big South Conference action this weekend at Presbyterian. The weekend series opens Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
