Gardner-Webb Opens Weekend With 4-2 Win Over Longwood

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 4-2 victory over Longwood on Friday evening.

Gardner-Webb (14-16, 3-4 Big South) led off the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive singles, with the third by Collin Thacker driving in Mickey Dugan for the first run of the evening for GWU.

That forced Longwood (10-18, 3-4 Big South) to pull their starting pitcher Cody Wager, brining in Michael Catlin in relief.

A sacrifice bunt by Danny Sullivan would put runners on second and third, and a fielder's choice bunt by Justin Kunz would score Corey Howard to tie the game.

Chandler Redmond would be up to bat next, and would reach on a fielding error by first baseman Justin Mitchell that allowed Kunz to score to give GWU a 3-2 advantage.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would score an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as a throwing error by third baseman Grant Keller would allow Kunz to reach safely and Thacker would score from second base after leading off the frame with a base hit.

Gardner-Webb had six base hits on the evening, led by Howard (2-for-3, run) and Thacker (2-for-4, RBI, run).

The Lancers had nine base hits, with Michael Osinski (3-for-4, 2 2B, RBI) leading the way.

Zach Mosay earned the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs, tossing an efficient 7.0 innings, allowing two runs with five strikeouts. Jarrett Thompson entered the game in the eighth in relief, recording two quick outs before being replaced by Aaron Stewart, who ended the frame with a strikeout.  Wil Sellers tossed the ninth, striking out two batters to earn the save.

Catlin took the loss for Longwood, hurling the final 3.0 innings, giving up two unearned runs with one strikeout.  Starter Wagner went 5.0 innings, allowing two runs with four strikeouts.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow afternoon, with the first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
