Game Recap: Baseball |

Diamond Dogs Blank UNC Asheville, 11-0, Friday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb scored runs in four consecutive innings while holding UNC Asheville to just five base hits on the evening to earn an 11-0 win on Friday evening.

Gardner-Webb (23-28, 10-13 Big South) earned its first win since a 10-4 victory at Presbyterian on April 28, breaking a nine-game losing skid.

UNC Asheville (23-29, 11-12 Big South) was held scoreless for the first time since a 7-0 loss at High Point on April 14.

After a delay of nearly two hours due to lightning in the area midway through the first inning, Gardner-Webb would take an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo blast by Chandler Redmond, his 14th home run of the season.

GWU would score once more in the third inning on a RBI groundout by Danny Sullivan that plated Paul Trick, who led off the frame with a base hit.

The Diamond 'Dogs would seize control of the game in the fourth inning, scoring six runs.  With one out, Peyton McGuire would hit a RBI single up the middle to plate Mickey Dugan, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning.  Later, Corey Howard would draw a bases-loaded walk from UNC Asheville reliever Brandon Harris.  That would bring up Collin Thacker, who would belt a single to left field to send McGuire across the plate.

A wild pitch would score Howard to set the score at 6-0, followed by a base hit through the right side by Redmond to score two runs.

GWU would hit three more solo home runs in the game as Matt Simmons and Trick would each hit one in the fifth inning, and Thacker would homer to left field in the eighth inning.

Landon Mitchell (5-4) was masterful on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing no runs on three base hits in five innings of work.  At one point, the freshman right-hander retired eight consecutive batters, and set a new career-high in strikeouts with eight while allowing no walks.

Mason Fox, Tyler Johnson, and Langdon Wilson combined to toss the final 3.0 innings, combining for eight strikeouts while only allowing two base hits.

Gardner-Webb had 13 base hits on the evening, with Thacker (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) leading that effort.

Justin Woods (3-4) took the loss for UNC Asheville, lasting just 2.0 innings while allowing one run on four hits.

The Bulldogs had five hits on the evening, with Tyler Serricchio (2-for-4, 2B) leading the way.

The regular season for both teams will conclude tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.  Prior to tomorrow's contest, the Gardner-Webb baseball team will recognize its senior class of Gage Parham, Matt Simmons, Danny Sullivan, Collin Thacker, and Paul Trick, with Senior Day festivities set to take place at approximately 1:40 pm.
