ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to hand Gardner-Webb a 3-1 loss on Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb drops to 22-25 overall and 9-12 in Big South play, while Winthrop improves to 26-18 overall and 13-5 in league action.

Gardner-Webb has now dropped six consecutive contests and today was the thirteenth game the Runnin' Bulldogs has lost by two or fewer runs this season.

Winthrop would score first, as a RBI double to center field by Grant English would give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would answer in the top of the seventh.  Danny Sullivan would lead off the frame with a single to left field, and would advance to second base as Jacob Whitley would reach on an error by Winthrop shortstop Mitch Spires.

Mickey Dugan would single to left field to load the bases with one out, and GWU would tie the game on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Simmons.

The Eagles would retake the lead in the bottom half of the seventh on a two-run single to left field by Matthew Mulkey.

Taylor Goodwin (1-2) was saddled with the loss for Gardner-Webb, recording just one out but allowing two runs on two base hits with two walks.  Starter Landon Mitchell lasted 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on five hits. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs had six base hits on the afternoon, with Sullivan (2-for-4, 2B) leading the way.

Dalton Whitaker (2-3) earned the win for Winthrop, tossing the final 2.1 innings, allowing no runs or base hits.  Starter Colton Rendon went 6.1 innings, allowing one run on five base hits.

The Eagles had eight base hits, led by English, who was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

Gardner-Webb will remain on the road for its next contest, opening a non-conference weekend series at West Virginia on Friday evening at 6:30 pm.
