Gardner-Webb Swim Programs Honored For Academic Success By CSCAA

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb's swim programs were recognized for their academic prowess recently by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), with men's swimmers Connor Bos and Jordan Mintz receiving individual accolades.
Both teams were among 720 programs recognized by the CSCAA as Scholar All-America teams in 2016-2017 – a new record for the 95-year old organization.
The Gardner-Webb women's swim team posted an impressive 3.61 team GPA to rank in the top-20 nationally at the Division I level. The GWU men also earned a spot on the list with a 3.07 team GPA.
The appearances are not unusual for each team, as the Gardner-Webb women have posted at least a 3.0 team GPA each year since its inception in 1999. The GWU men's team has done the same each season since beginning competition in 2007.
Bos and Mintz were each named to the CSCAA Scholar All-American honorable mention team. A record 997 swimmers and divers were honored by the CCSA individually. In order to qualify, student-athletes must have achieved a GPA of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective swimming and diving championships in 2016-2017.
Bos adds to his long list of accomplishments in and out of the pool. The Holland, Mich., native graduated from GWU in May with a degree in economics and finance and compiled a 4.0 cumulative GPA during his academic career in Boiling Springs.
He was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team earlier this summer and was also presented with the Big South Conference's George A. Christenberry Award for his academic performance.
Bos was also named 2017 CCSA (Coastal Collegiate Sports Association) Men's Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He swan to conference titles in the 100 back (47.61) individually and as a member of the 200 medley relay team (1:27.66) at the CCSA Championships in Athens, Ga. Bos finished his career with 14 different CCSA championship – eight individual and six relays.
Bos was a 17-time All-CCSA selection and swam in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.
Mintz, a freshman from Fuquay-Varina, N.C., enjoyed a breakout season in 2016-2017. He became the first GWU men's swimmer to break the 2-minute barrier in the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:58.82 to win the CCSA individual title. He also swam the second leg on the 200 medley relay championship team with Bos and earned All-CCSA honors in the 100 breaststroke (2nd),
