Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Owls Edge Runnin' Bulldogs 2-1

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fell to Florida Atlantic University this evening by a score of 2-1. The two goals by the Owls in the first period would prove to be enough to down the Runnin' Bulldogs. While the Runnin' Bulldogs battled until the end, they were unable to find their equalizer.

"I thought we played well at times, but we also made mistakes that cost us," said head coach Mike Varga. "When you play a good team, the mistakes and lapses in concentration will create problems," he continued, as they did tonight.

Florida Atlantic scored the first goal of the match in the 17th minute as Asta Arnadottir took the corner kick for the Owls and Ebba Blomqvist found the back of the net on her header.

Gardner-Webb quickly retaliated as Samuelle Grove scored her first goal of the season - an unassisted goal from three yards out.

Later in the period, Mary O'Hara made her way up field to score unassisted from 18 yards out.

The Florida Atlantic offense was busy tonight as they put up 16 shots in the match, nine of which were on goal. Midfielder Mary O'Hara had herself a busy night as she recorded five shots, with four shots on goal, while scoring in the 35th minute. The Owls also took nine corner kicks in the match.

Gardner-Webb notched six shots in the match, with just two on goal. Both shots on goal came off the foot of Samuelle Grove. Ty Snell, Samuelle Grove and Annie Ross were responsible for the Runnin' Bulldogs shots this evening.  The Runnin' Bulldogs took six corner kicks in the match.

GWU goalkeeper Keely Brown recorded five saves in goal as she played the full 90:00 minutes this evening.

Owls goalkeeper Jennifer Ocampo made just one save while conceding one goal at the 19:15 mark in the first period.

"We are not the team that our record indicates. We have played as tough a schedule as I have ever been a part of and we are competitive in each match," claimed Varga.

The Runnin' Bulldogs focus now shifts toward the University of Louisville, as the team travels to play the Cardinals on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:00 PM.

Gardner-Webb falls to 1-6 on the season, as Florida Atlantic climbs to 4-3-1.
