Offensive Outburst Pushes Louisville Past Gardner-Webb 4-0

LOUISVILLE, K.Y. – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team surrendered another loss this evening, falling to 1-7 on the season, as they squared off with the University of Louisville Cardinals.

Head coach Mike Varga claimed after the game, "Our record is not an accurate picture of this team. Louisville is a quality team that will have a good year in the ACC. It was a good environment for us to play in."

Prior to the match, the Cardinals recorded an average of 1.86 goals per game, while Gardner-Webb has been limited to just 0.57.

Louisville opened the scoring as Allison Whitfield recorded her second goal of the season for the Cardinals as she found the back of the net on a corner kick 16 minutes into the first period. Whitfield, the Louisville native would go on to add another tally to the Cardinals score column minutes later as she scored off a deflection at the 25:28 mark in the second period.

Two other Cardinals proceeded to score goals of their own against the Runnin' Bulldogs in the second period. Kaela Dickerman netted her first goal of the season on a cross from inside the box in the 56th minute. Taylor Kerwin was credited with the assist.

Mollie Rouse of Louisville also joined in on the offensive outburst with six minutes left in the match, as she scored her first goal of the season on the assist from Kerwin.

The Runnin' Bulldogs offense managed to get off just three shots, while Kayla Curatolo recorded Gardner-Webb's lone shot on goal for the night.

The Louisville offense took 21 shots on the night, 12 of which were on goal.

Gardner-Webb's goalkeepers had a busy night as Keely Brown started the match making six saves, while Louisville pushed three goals passed her in 75 minutes of play. Tomke Zeeh also saw time in goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs as she made one save, and allowed one goal.

Despite their woes Varga stated, "This team has grown and I have no doubt that we will be ready for USC Upstate."

Gardner-Webb will take the field against USC Upstate Monday, Sept. 18 as they welcome the Spartans to Greene-Harbison Stadium.  The Runnin' Bulldogs will begin conference play on Sept. 23 as they travel to Liberty to take on the Flames in Lynchburg, Va.
