GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team claimed victory tonight in a back and forth effort as they topped the No. 8 Furman Paladins, 5-4 in double overtime. With tonight's win, the team climbs to 3-2-1 on the season.
"That was a great team win. We played very well and it was great to go on the road and beat a ranked opponent in Furman. I am very proud of our team for their effort tonight," said head coach
Tony Setzer.
Jack Hoey broke the scoring open tonight with his first goal of the season as he found the back of the net on a header, 11 minutes into the match.
Marc-Kevin Schwenk was credited with the assist as he took the corner kick which led to the 'Dawgs first goal.
Magnus Moldjord, a staple for the Gardner-Webb offense, netted his sixth goal of the season at the 23:17 mark in the first period on the assist from
Simen Olsen.
Gardner-Webb continued to push as they posted their third goal of the match just 33 minutes into the first period.
Severin Soerlie scored his fourth goal of the season on a header following a Gardner-Webb corner kick.
Furman responded in the 44
th minute as Laurence Wyke scored on a penalty kick for his second goal of the season.
Wyke found the back of the net again, in similar fashion in the 54
th minute as he scored his second goal of the match on another penalty kick.
The Paladins evened the scoring in the 59
th minute as Connor Hubbard made his way through traffic and secured a spot in the back of the net from inside the six. Josiah Baker had the assist.
Oskar Wang scored at the 69:26 mark to give GWU the lead yet again with a sliding shot on a low cross from Moldjord.
Furman's Wyke made his presence known again late in the match with 14 minutes remaining as he scored his third goal of the match on as many penalty kicks.
Tied at the end of regulation, an additional 10 minutes would also prove to not be enough as the gamed was still knotted up at 4.
In double overtime,
Severin Soerlie pushed one beyond reach of the Furman keeper to claim a huge victory for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Soerlie's goal in the 102 minute was his second of the match, and fifth on the season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs offense was efficient tonight as they took 12 shots, with eight on goal, while netting five goals. Furman remained in attack mode throughout the night posting 27 shots, 13 of which were on goal.
GWU goalkeeper Jacob Beyer made nine saves in the win. The Paladins goalkeeper, Ben Hale made just three saves while allowing five goals.
"We'll look to take the momentum from tonight's match and carry it over as we begin conference play," Setzer stated.
The Runnin' Bulldogs take the field next on the road in their first conference match of the season against Liberty on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7:00 pm.
