GWU Swimming Teams Up with Cancer Services for Community Outreach

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb swim team completed their service project this weekend, donating thousands of bottles of Gatorade to Cancer Services which serves patients throughout Cleveland, Gaston, and Lincoln counties.
With hearts to help others, the project began as just a thought on how they could serve their community. "Our goal was to provide relief to those who are suffering, and it turned into something beautiful," said Juliana Denmark.
As patients undergo treatment, many experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration and severe malaise. As a simple remedy, these patients often turn to Gatorade and Chicken Noodle soup, thus sparking the team's idea to commence their Gatorade drive.
The drive began on August 18, Move-In day at Gardner-Webb, and ran through Family Weekend on Sept. 16. "Our team responded without any hesitation. All we had to do was spread the word that there was need somewhere, and as soon as people started getting to campus, bottles flooded in," said Denmark.
The team was able to donate thousands of Gatorade bottles this Saturday as they loaded the bed of a truck and delivered them to Cancer Services. The supplies will sustain the organizations needs for almost four months.
While their service will surely impact others, it too had an impact on the swimmers who initiated the act. "We don't realize how blessed we are until we are able to humble ourselves and help out the community and those who need it," said London Schumacher.
Riley Brock added, "it is a blessing to represent a selfless team like GWU swimming".
Mason Hutchinson also mentioned, "we have talked about doing this every three months so we can replenish their supplies as needed".
