Runnin' Bulldogs Battle to 1-1 Draw in 2OT Against Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime Saturday afternoon as they traveled to take on Big South opponent Charleston Southern in their second conference match of the season.

Head coach Mike Varga stated after the match "I didn't like the way we started the match and it led to us giving away an early goal," which proved to be costly as the GWU defense shut out Charleston Southern for the remaining minutes. "We got a huge lift from quite a few players coming off the bench today and that really changed the match for us," he continued.

Charleston Southern took an early lead 16 minutes into the match on a goal from Jordan Newman. Newman found the back of the net as she won a battle for the ball in front of the GWU net following a failed clear.

Gardner-Webb's Kayla Curatolo responded to even the score at 1-1, 54 minutes into the second period. Curatolo netted her first goal of the season as she dribbled around the defense and scored in the top left corner of the net.

Tied following regulation, Goalkeeper Keely Brown made two saves in the first overtime period against the Bucs offense to preserve the score, sending the match into double OT.

Aubrie Jackson lead the offensive efforts for Gardner-Webb in overtime as she got off two shots, both sailing high beyond the crossbar. Stina Kleppe also recorded a shot, missing high seconds before the match came to a conclusion, ending in a draw.

Gardner-Webb managed to get off 17 shots, with six on goal. Stina Kleppe and Kayla Curatolo mirrored each other tallying five shots, with two on goal in the match. Samuelle Grove and Maggie Mae Everett each added a shot on goal for the 'Dawgs.

Charleston Southern recorded a similar offensive output in a well-fought match as the Bucs took 16 shots, with seven on goal. Jordan Newman was the lone Buccaneer to record multiple shots on goal for CSU today with two. Five other Buccaneers each posted one of their own.

Both GWU and CSU took five corner kicks in the match, while CSU recorded three within a two-minute span in the second overtime period.

Keely Brown remained steady between the posts today recording six saves in 110 minutes of play.

Charleston Southern goalkeeper Alyssa Dellacqua tallied five saves of her own while conceding one goal.

The Runnin' Bulldogs now stand at (2-8-1, 0-1-1 BSC) following today's match. The 'Dawgs are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 PM as they take on Winthrop at home in a Big South matchup.
