GREENVILLE, N.C. –
Nicole Celarek posted a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, while
Keira Moore had 10 kills and nine blocks to lead Gardner-Webb to a 3-1 win over The Citadel on Friday afternoon at the ECU Classic hosted by East Carolina.
Gardner-Webb (3-5) won the match by scores of 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, and 25-16, while holding The Citadel (2-7) to a .054 hitting percentage throughout the match. The Runnin' Bulldogs attacked at a .259 clip with 50 kills.
Celarek led the 'Dogs with 12 kills, while Moore led the squad with nine blocks.
Amanda Sahm tallied 27 assists while
Emma Milstead led the team with 14 digs.
Sharlissa De Jesus led The Citadel with 15 kills, while a trio of players each collected two blocks. McKenzie Boland led the team with 20 assists, and Caricia Rodriguez led the team with 12 digs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out to an early 9-3 lead after a block by Dyson and
Maria Emmick that led to a Citadel timeout. The Bulldogs would respond with a 9-3 run to tie the set at 12-12.
Both teams would exchange points, with the set being tied at 23-23, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would take the final two points to take the opening set, 25-23, sealing the set on a block by Celarek and Nicole Dyson.
Gardner-Webb would control most of the second set as the 'Dogs would jump out to an early 7-3 lead. GWU would cruise to a 25-16 set win, taking the set on a kill by
Molly Johnston.
The Citadel would lead throughout the third set, building a five-point lead at 10-5. Gardner-Webb would fight back to pull within one point at 19-18 after an attack error by The Citadel's Mellanie King, but The Citadel would go on to take the set by a 25-22 score.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would reclaim control of the match in the fourth set, taking a 7-2 lead after a block by Moore and Emmick. GWU would not look back, going on to take the set by a 25-16 score to claim the overall match win.
Gardner-Webb returns to action tonight at 7:00 pm, taking on tournament host East Carolina.
