Gardner-Webb Falls to Charleston Southern on the Road Sunday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs fell to the Charleston Southern Bucs, 83-68, on Sunday night, as Charleston Southern snapped a six-game losing streak.

Midway through the first period, the Runnin' Bulldogs (10-11, 4-3 Big South Conference) jumped out to a 20-12 lead after Liam O'Reilly connected from deep on back-to-back occasions, but the Bucs (7-12, 2-6 BSC) battled back.

With just 75 seconds remaining in the opening period, Charleston Southern capped a 16-4 run to take a four-point lead, 28-24. O'Reilly again connected from three-point land to cut the CSU advantage to one, 28-27.

To end the half, the two teams traded three-pointers, with Phlandrous Fleming connecting for the Bucs and O'Reilly hitting nothing but net for Gardner-Webb. The Bucs led by a point at the intermission, 31-30.

Charleston Southern opened the second half on a 7-0 run before a DJ Laster layup made the score 38-32 in favor of the visitors. From there, GWU would battle to stay within single digits, but did cut the Bucs lead to five just before the second media timeout of the final period when Eric Jamison connected on a layup to make the score 52-47.

CSU then embarked on a 12-0 run over the next four plus minutes to extend its advantage to 17, 64-47. The Runnin' Bulldogs would counter with 15-6 a run of their own, capped off by a Laster and-1 with 2:13 remaining. Laster's old-fashioned three-point play cut the Charleston Southern lead to eight, 70-62.

The visitors from Boiling Springs were unable to get any closer, as the Bucs ended the night on a 13-6 run to secure victory, 83-68.

Gardner-Webb had three players score in double figures, led by O'Reilly with 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including 7-of-12 from beyond the arc. David Efianayi and Laster also contributed heavily, scoring 17 and 14 points in the contest.

Charleston Southern was led by Christian Keeling's 26 points. Fleming (20 points) and Javis Howard (12 points) also scored in double figures.

The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 48.6 percent from the field, while the Bucs managed to hit over 50 percent of their attempts, converting 26-of-51 shots (51.3 percent). Both teams collected 30 rebounds, but Charleston Southern had only 13 turnovers, compared to 19 for Gardner-Webb.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will play their second straight Big South Conference road contest when they travel to UNC Ashville on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be seen on the Big South Network.
