FARMVILLE, Va. –
Maddie Turlington scored a late first-half goal, and
Keely Brown held Longwood scoreless as the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs topped Longwood, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs now possess a three-game winning streak and are 8-4-3 overall and 5-1-1 in Big South Conference play. With the win, the team is atop the conference standings. Longwood falls to 6-6-3 overall and 4-2-2 in conference action.
"It wasn't the prettiest match that we've played, and Longwood put a lot of pressure on our back four to play a mistake free match, but our defending team was up to the task," said head coach
Mike Varga. "Today was a great win for our team. Maddie scored a timely goal, and we showed a lot of grit."
Gardner-Webb managed only eight shots, four in each half, but it was enough to defeat the Lancers, despite the fact that the home team had 23 attempts.
Each team managed four shots on goal, with
Ty Snell and Turlington having shots saved in the 33
rd and 36
th minutes before Gardner-Webb could get on the scoreboard.
In the 40
th minute, a free kick was lobbed into the box and bounced around before Turlington was able to gain control and score her fifth goal of 2018. Turlington's goal would turn out to be the game-winner.
In the second half, the Runnin' Bulldogs managed three shots before ten minutes of play had been completed, but
Stina Kleppe's two shots, as well as
Bailey Hierholzer's attempt, were not on goal.
The Lancers took three of their four shots on goal in the second period, but Brown stopped them all. Longwood's shots on goal came in the 60
th, 71
st and 79
th minutes respectively.
The Runnin' Bulldogs managed just one attempt on goal in the final period, which came off the foot of Kleppe in the 83
rd minute.
Erin Shamleffer led Gardner-Webb in shots, taking three of the team's eight attempts. Turlington, who scored twice and added an assist in a pair of victories this week, took two shots of her own.
Brown stopped all four of Longwood's shots on goal en route to her second clean sheet of the year. The Lancers' Madison Van Dyke stopped three of the Runnin' Bulldogs shots but surrendered the game-winning goal to Turlington.
Gardner-Webb will look to win its fourth consecutive match when it travels to High Point on Wednesday, October 17 for a 7 p.m. match with the Panthers.
