Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls to Presbyterian, 2-0, on Senior Day

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – In the final regular season home match, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs men's soccer team fell to the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, 2-0, in Big South Conference play.

Prior to the match, head coach Tony Setzer honored the team's seniors – Jack Hoey, Ismael Guerrero, Alain Delgado, Austin Billiott, Luke Gazak and Alex Gimenez.

"These six seniors have meant a lot to the program over the past seasons," said Setzer. "I'm proud of the effort they gave on the field but am more proud of the men they have become. They've made lasting contributions to Gardner-Webb men's soccer."

When the match began, Presbyterian quickly got on the scoreboard, scoring less than three minutes into the contest. Sergio Pinto took a pass directly in the center of the box and converted, giving the Blue Hose a 1-0 lead.

20 minutes later, the Blue Hose added to their advantage, scoring via a penalty kick after a foul in the box.

"The two early goals hurt us," said Setzer. "We gave them too big of a lead and just couldn't battle back today."

In the 27th minute, Presbyterian earned its second penalty kick of the afternoon, but Daniel Husa made a diving stop to his right, and the Gardner-Webb back line cleared the ball away.

Hoey, the Runnin' Bulldogs' leading goal scorer, took Gardner-Webb's only shot in the first half.

In the second half, Oskar Wang attempted a shot wide of the goal in the 47th minute, which would be the 'Dogs only look for 15 minutes until freshman Giovanni Lagnerini entered the match and immediately fired a shot that was blocked.

Simen Olsen recorded Gardner-Webb's first shot on goal in the 67th minute, while Mads Rismoen had the Runnin' Bulldogs second look on goal with five minutes left in the contest.

Both players came up short as Presbyterian left Boiling Springs with a 2-0 victory.

The Blue Hose outshot Gardner-Webb, 9-6, and 5-2 in shots on goal.

Husa stopped three shots for the Runnin' Bulldogs, while Presbyterian's Jan Hoffelner saved a pair of attempts.

The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 3-10-1 and 3-4 in the Big South. Presbyterian picks up its sixth win in 16 contests and is 5-2 in BSC matches.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will close out the regular season at UNC Asheville on Wednesday, October 31 where they'll look to clinch a spot in the upcoming Big South Conference tournament. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. from Asheville, N.C.
