CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After earning 12 points in Big South Conference play, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs men's soccer team will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and travel to No. 4 Campbell on Sunday, November 4 at 6 p.m.
Gardner-Webb (4-10-1, 4-4 Big South) earned a spot in the tournament with a 2-1 overtime victory over UNC Asheville in Wednesday's season finale. Petter Johansen put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead in the 27th minute by scoring off a deflection, and Gardner-Webb held the lead until Asheville was able to equalize late in the second half.
In overtime, it took only 3:03 for the Runnin' Bulldogs to score as Jack Hoey netted his team-leading seventh goal of the year from outside the 18, giving GWU the crucial victory.
Campbell (7-8-2, 4-3-1 BSC) locked up the No. 4 seed by accumulating 13 points in conference play. The Fighting Camels are seeking their first Big South Conference tournament crown since 1992. The Fighting Camels were shutout by the Longwood Lancers in last night's season finale, 3-0.
Earlier this season, the two teams met in Boiling Springs with Campbell earning the 1-0 victory. The Fighting Camels' JJ Donnelly scored his sixth goal of the season at the time off a rebound from Thibaut Jacquel's attempt in the 60th minute. Despite six shots after Campbell took the lead, including a pair on goal, the Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to equalize.
Regular season champion High Point and No. 2 seed Radford each earned a first-round bye, while No. 3 Presbyterian will host No. 6 Longwood on Sunday as well.
The match between Campbell and Gardner-Webb will kickoff at 6 p.m. in Buies Creek, N.C. on Sunday, November 4.
